Style...

I think it has more to do with Style or appearance. Many of the more recent dolls have a blocky, Invader Zim or Southpark type look to them, whereas many of the ones I find appealing are of the realistic or even cutesy type like the Animaniacs or the old WB cartoons. While there are some few in each update that meets this criteria, the majority appear to be of the former, rather than the latter. I love cartoon characters. I just like for them to be less of an exercise in abstract art. Some artists do make eyecandy, well drawn, and a pleasure to look at.
Some people find abstract art extremely appealing. I am just a simple person, I like to look at a rose or a magnolia blossom or a morning glory and recognise it as a flower, rather than attempt to fit the rendering into a mental framework and use what few remaining braincells I have left ( old age and overwork is catching up to me) to interpet what the artist had in mind. I really don't mean to come accross as pevish or whiney, I was just curious if this style was the future as (to me it does seem to dominate) or if its' just a passing fad.
