Re: Virus through the LZH file -- possible?

by (no login)

It's probably not possible. An LZH file is just an archive file containing a KiSS doll. A KiSS doll is just graphical data - no macros or other virus vulnerabilities. So a LZH KiSS doll is not more capable of carrying a virus than a ZIP full of GIF images.

However, as I understand it, some of the old, obsolete virus scanners incorrectly identify some LZH files as containing viruses. If your friend was using a virus scanner that was old enough to make that mistake, it's highly likely that the scanner was so old and obsolete that it was not able to protect her from the real viruses she contracted from other sources.

I certainly don't blame her for being upset about her computer getting trashed by a virus but it's not possible for her to have gotten that virus from image data.

When she gets her computer running again, I strongly recommend that she upgrade her virus protection. KiSS dolls can't give you a virus but there are plenty of other ways to get one.
