Hey, I'm wondering, does anybody know where I can download Victoria's KiSS doll, Emma? It's her latest, but she hasn't updated her original website in forever, so I was wondering, is there any place you can get it (other than OW)? Thanks.

Starting out

by (no login)

For the most help you need to indicate what kind of computer you have and what graphics software you use. KiSS sets can be made from a variety of graphics programs, then converted into .cel format. OW probably has basic tools, and I think the IP links page has links for them also. There are a ton of tutorials out there, often specific to certain software and of less help if you are using other programs - I think the IP has links to those also. I use Mac myself, so can't offer any specific help if you are on PC.

Otakworld Running More Smoothly

by k24601 (no login)

I haven't tried the forums yet but the other day I could download some things from OW and today I could finally download the new kisekae sets , alot of older sets are back up but tons of older sets are down ( you'll see what I mean if you spend alot of time like me going through and downloading sets ) ...I'm very happy ( as I'm sure the staff and other subscribers must be ) about this and am glad that things have gotten better. Yay , no apocalypse. laughs
Thanks Jade for your posts.

I've noticed that a lot of links to other KiSS sites are either broken or do not work. I would really like to see some of the artists sites. So, how about everyone posts their favorite KiSS doll sites?

Here's mine, it's Aragonite's KiSS Site.

Re: Even more ominous...

by Jade (no login)

The forums seem to go down once in a while, but more often it's connectivity between the ISP and OW's ISP. Often plenty of people can still access it while others can't. I think it's mainly webtraffic and so on.

Dov's delay in update is caused by a few things... major HD crash and loss of data. Lots of busy re-building going on. That coincided with the last few weeks of the semester, so final projects and exams got in the way. Dov is on break now, but had a serious dental issue that causes more delays. Dov is working on stuff now, and hopes to have an update on the 26th.

Jade, any other information?

by (no login)

When I've been able to get on OW [the server problems] I've not been able to renew my subscription [more server problems?] and had my emails bounce back to me [more server problems?]. Actually, I'm a bit optimistic - the last emails I sent have not bounced [yet]. I did notice an explanation and apology at OW today which indicates progress. You might ask if they finally received my emails - I think they will want people to be able to renew.

I hope that all the problems relate to OW getting everything up and running. I fear they may be in the process of Mac incompatibility.

Re: Jade, any other information?

by Jade (no login)

Well, Dov's HD crash and data loss was holding things up, and then the server move went kerplooey, but I think those are the main two things. Once it's all sorted out, I'm sure they'll get things back to normal.

I don't know about the mac incompatibility. I think there are a few good browsers for mac that would support everything on the site that wasn't cosmetic (like colored scroll bars or something).

Otakuworld Messed Up , Now Gone

by k24601 (no login)

I hadn't visited otakuworld in a long time , recently I went to check it out .....it looked like there was finally new kisekae up but the front page was all weird , when I went to try and download something , the page wouldn't show up ( one of those things that gives you the "check your connection" or whatever error message )
I even tried to email the webmaster and that didn't work!
Then I thought maybe it's just a temporary problem and they'll fix it soon...after a nice long nap and some other stuff...went to check it again....this time got nothing at all.
I hadn't known about the hacking/cracking, the fact that the forums gone down before , and data loss until just now when I went searching google "otakuworld down" and found some info that way and came across this place / you all chatting about it too
blush
This bites! I feel especially sorry for the staff of OW....all that hard work....aiiyee....surely this is a sign of the apocalypse....
I hope those hackers/crackers get caught and really bad things happen to them!

Some helpful links

by (no login)

Here are a few tutorials for beginner KiSS makers. If you don't understand something in them, you can e-mail me or post your questions here and usuallt someone will try to help.

- Otakuworld.com - has a links page especially for tutorials. Seems to be down but should be back up soon.

- http://skycastle.freewebspace.com/tutorial.htm - this is the tutorial I wrote a long time ago, and it is pretty simple to understand. I'm re-writing it for my new way of doll-making, but it should help nonetheless.

- http://kissclub.tripod.com/howtokis.html - by Dawn

- http://members.tripod.com/EmbyQuinn/embytips.html - by Emby Quinn

- http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Bay/8894/kiss-t.html - by Kim Gavlas

- http://www.angelfire.com/sd/SatorisKiSS/walkthru.html - by Satori

Doll Needs Clothing Badly!

by (no login)

I'm back on the net (comp problems, sorry to everyone I was working with). I have a doll (Yes, I finally drew a basedoll that I'm satisfied with) But when I tried making some clothes I was less than satisfied.

If anyone would be interested you can check out the basedoll here:

Aarabold.gif

or the partially done file (including fkiss) here

Aarabold.lzh (151k)

Warning: This doll has realistic male nudity (but it isn't sexual)

wsvc, what else is there?

by (no login)

I have been working on a doll for a few years, mostly because I have to stop for months on end, and it has an obsessivly extensive wardrobe. So, WSVC only lets you use so many cels in a bitmap; what other programs are out there to create cells in and/or could anyone direct me to a good tutorial for expansion sets, I don't know how they work. I've never made a REAL doll before but I've been succesful in my baby test dolls. I would appreciate any help on the matter!

Re: wsvc, what else is there?

by (no login)

There are a lot of conversion programx available, but as long as you're using wsvc already, there's no reason not to continue (switching to another program is a while new learning curve after all) ... there is no reason you can't combine cels from several wsvc layouts into a single KiSS set - the primary difficulty would be (ossibly) having different palettes... you can avoid that bymaking a copy of what you already have and erasing half the cels from one copy & the other half from the other - then both should create the same palette, but you have free space on both for more cels

it's not a viewable file

by Ari (no login)

If I recall correctly, it's just the thumbnail that you see when you hit File-->Open in PlayFKiss. Check under the part where you see all the file names, there should be a little button for the preview, and that's where the thumnbnail shows up for that doll.

KTN=BMP

by hRon (no login)

Ari and Kivva are right, except for the title of Ari's response.
Although the KTN (KiSS Thumb-Nail) file is intended to make it
easier to recognise each set as you browse, by showing it as
a "preview" in the file-open dialogue box, it is actually a
bit-map, therefore can be viewed by anything able to view a
".BMP" file. You could even associate KTNs with your favourite
BMP viewer, e.g. MS Paint, and you can even manipulate them

Saving screenshots

by Kivva (no login)

A thumbnail is a very small image, not intended for 'saving' your favorite 'designs'. Rather it is to make it easier to recognise each set as you browse.

To save an image of a set you have just the way you want it, go under:

File> Save As> Screenshot

This will give you a .BMP of the entire screen at 100% size.

ATTN: Any real old timer KiSS packrats

by (no login)

Any of the old timers who have been around like forever, do you possibly have in your collections Kaina_SK.lzh?

It was my first doll, made many years ago. I remember posting to
the KiSS newsgroup, along possibly with a picture of an updated version I was making
about 3 years ago.

It was a crudely drawn doll with long pink and purple hair, The head
resembles a circle or peanut. It had about 9 outfits, including a
cheerleader outfit, it pretty much had no shading and the file size was in
the range of 32k.

I realize 3 years is an eternity on the net but does anyone possibly keep
EVERYTHING and have it? I know for a fact it was posted here at one point.

I am redoing it again, and no longer even have the computer it was saved on
to possibly get it back.

I would love you forever if anyone still has it.

I might have it, I'll have to dig through my rather large kiss collection to see. I hope I do. I'll have to wait until I get on my normal computer to check.

WELL, thank for your efforts in creating a new viewer the supports the latest community developed code. REALLY. HOW KIND.

If you can do better, go for it. Dove spent more than a year creating a new viewer that would be more functional or the users and CREATORS. I'd say you have no idea what you're saying or implying, Mr. ANONYMOUS. I for one, and glad to finally have an updated software that makes KiSS managment and creation simpler.

Besides that

by Grey Myst (no login)

My old computer STUNK and it worked. It was a wee bit slow on advanced sets, but bearable. This was a 266 mhz with windows 98 and a 8 meg video card! Come on now, if you PC isn't atleast that, really you can't expect much to work. For laughs I also tried it on a 486/120 with a 4 meg video card, you guessed it, it worked

We aren't talking expensive brand new top of the line hardware here, most any well configured system(and yes that includes recent non-generic drivers for all hardware) will run it reasonably enough

The scripabilty and other gadgets(as well as FUTURE exapandibility) it adds make it worth the drivers and directx. Drivers and Directx are free. Remind me why it's supposed to bother me that directkiss (and about half of all commercial software) use them?

Re: Besides that

by Amaryllis (no login)

I've noticed if you're using a laptop, you will probably have some glitchy pixel problems with Direct Kiss. This is because the graphics card is integrated into the computer system and causes it to pull on system ram rather than its own ram. Its nothing against Direct Kiss, its just a graphical ram usage. My laptop is actually faster than my desktop, but because it has a separate graphics card it runs Direct Kiss without any problems. Before I installed a graphics card that wasn't integrated so I had a few issues.
So if your having some graphical glitchy pixels it could be related to the fact that you might have an integrated graphics card. Also you might want to check what settings your graphics card is at in your display properties.
Right click on your desktop
Click Properties
Go to Settings
Click Advanced
Click Troubleshoot
Take the arrow to full and enable write combining.
This should help with some of the problems you might be having.

What other program can I use instead because I am yearning to make another beta of my doll!

Please please help me? as soon as possible if anybody has a solution.
(should also mention that my computer has a little problem with opening installation files so it would be helpful if programs are downloaded in zip format)

Note to Ruthless: Unfortunately the people who don't get it after the first fifty times still don't get it even when you speak slowly and loudly.

While the point from Ruthless is important the comment which precipitated it also implied that Dov was somehow ripping off artists. It basically said he stole a product from others and retailed it.

Artists know OW is a subscription site. Dov let artists know about the change and a few asked their sets be removed. Dov honored their wishes.

Dov does not prowl the web looking for sets to steal. People send him sets to post on OW, knowing it is a subscription site, because
a. they consider it an honor to have their work there.
b. they want to support OW.
c. they are hoping to earn a subscription.

Some artists have made sets which explicitly say they are ONLY for distribution at OW. That is the artist's choice, not Dov's suggestion.

While people have stolen sets to send to OW Dov takes extraordinary care to identify and remove these sets. If the artist doesn't want them at OW Dov doesn't want them at OW.

All of which is simply to say, Dov has high regard for the wishes of artists. This may be the reason artists want to support OW. Sets at OW are there because the artist sent them in, knowing it was a subscription site.

Look at how you are so determined to ignore reality, and focus on your greed for dolls. You express quite clearly your overwhelming selfishness and drive to get what you want no matter what it costs others. Yes, I do get it. What you express shows that you are determined to have what you want, ignoring the needs of everyone else, much like a child. I also get your ignorance. Otakuworld does NOT have a monopoly on KiSS, and you do not have to pay to play with KiSS. The viewers are free, and not only does OW offer some free KiSS dolls, so do as many artist as possibly can given the reality of how much it costs to supply them. I do not want your money, and I'm sure nobody else does, either. If you could actually read and understand just the posts in this thread you would know this. I for one, do not CARE what you want, or how badly you want it. I care about members of the community who do all they can to show respect, caring and support for everyone else. I CARE about people who are capable of understanding reality, and who support the needs of the artist who are driven to create. If you don't like it, you don't have to stick around, and I personlly would rather you did not.

We don't have a monopoly. You can get lots of KiSS dolls for free from artists' websites. If we were trying for a monopoly, why would we have this list of links to artists' websites? We even let you download the viewers from us for free.

While I admire your honesty, accusing us of selfishness and greed while saying you don't care about anyone but yourself is both inaccurate and hypocritical. And it isn't going to cause anyone to feel any sympathy toward you. If you don't care about anyone else, why should they care about you?

niiiice fight

by Yo (no login)

I think otakuworld IS indeed a monopoly since it's the only kiss dolls paysite of importance (if not the only at all). I remember too the times when it was free, and yes, I think something was lost when it became a paysite.

Now, dove, even at otakuworld there are links to other sites, artist sites, but you admit that there are artists who make their dolls available only at otaku world.

Now let me give you an example of a monopoly: take advantage of the talent of greedy kissers to expand your archive and increase your monopoly. Sound familiar?

Now, don't misunderstand me, I don't want you dove to stop getting profits from it (or paying bandwith, whatever), I think it would be great to have a free archive of kiss dolls and no I don't think your evil, i think you, just like the guy who started the post are greedy. Just that dove sherman has made quite some contributions to kiss comunnity, unlike.

Peace everyone.

Legal definition of a monopoly

by waterlogged twinkie (no login)

If you would like to call OW a monopoly, let's examine the legal definition of a monopoly, shall we? We'll go through it piece by piece, to make it really clear what you're talking about.

monopoly definition –

By the way, this is courtesy of LegalDefinitions.com. Feel free to check my resources.

a monopoly is characterized

or described as

by the power to fix prices

OW does not force you to pay money. You can make sets, you can download them elsewhere.

or exclude competition,

There are several competitive websites, kisekaeworld.com being one of them.

coupled with policies designed to use or preserve that power.

The policy regarding this says nothing about you must get dolls here.

Feel free to use this definition again and explain it your way.

Re: Re: Re:Does anyone have.....

Well people in shops buy the merchandise off the makers of the merchandise in the first place Otakua world dosn't pay kiss makers to put there dolls on the site.

Well, we do give artists free subscriptions which have a monetary value which is greater than what a percentage of the profits would get them. A "free subscription" isn't free for me to give away - I still have to pay for the bandwidth that the subscription uses so it does have value. Instead of paying the artist directly, I cover the costs of their bandwidth.

No, we don't send out actual cash money or checks to the contributing artists because there isn't that much profit. Maybe, one day, when enough people subscribe so that there is lots of profit, we can pay the artists real money beyond a free subscription. Who could object to that?

I bet you'd be pretty cross if someone took your tv and then sold it on the web.

That would depend on the situation. I only post dolls that the KiSS artists tell me to post. So, I suppose if I told someone to sell my TV on the web, I would not be angry with them for selling my TV on the web. On the other hand, I might be disappointed with them if I told them to do it and then they did not do it.

That's if you only subscribe for one month. If you subscribe for more than one month, it costs less per month. If you subscribe for 3 months, it's $5.95 for each month. If you get 6 months or a year, it's $5.10 for each month. The 6 month and one year subs used to be $5.40 per month but we lowered them a while back. It was never $7.95 per month for anything other than a single-month subscription. Maybe you focused on the highest price because you were mad that it cost anything at all.

cruel world

by (no login)

Tea's quite right, if you're having difficulty grasping what's going on here, consider that OW is an archive, the most complete in the Kis World. In this sense it's like a library & what you're paying for is a "library card"; a library doesn't write its own books, doesn't even sell them... & neither does OW, (& better than a print-lib you get to keep the material). You are paying for a privilege, a convenience, it's a very common biz model.

Now why do I have a sneaking suspicion that despite not knowing a thing about you, you still haven't checked the IKL & gone thru every site listed there? Had you done so, you would find that upwards of 50% (Dov, do we actually have a figure for this?) of the Sets on OW are available on the artist's sites w/ no fees involved.

So you said something silly, NBD, people do. Most here won't consider you as having said something wrong unless you go to the wall in an attempt to defend it.

Just because it's not worthwhile to YOU doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile to anyone. Some people think that 8 dollars (which really isn't that much money for a large number of people) is okay to spend on something they enjoy. Plenty of people spend more than 8 dollars per month on their hobbies yet you probably don't act as if they're weird because of that. I don't see why kisekae is any different.

It really annoys me when people think that their perception of something is absolute.

I currently use otakuworld often, without a sub, because I can use the extensive database to find artists with a style I like... try that.

While I certainly hope you wouldn't drill a hole in your head slowly or otherwise, I should clarify that the 8 bucks refer to is only for the one-month subscription. The other subscriptions work out to 6 or 5 bucks a month. These are normal prices for a subscription-based website based on the cost of running a server to deliver the amount of bandwidth needed for downloading all those dolls.

>Granted I collect the sets, I just can't see paying money for something like that. Keep it a hobby people, it's not a living, nor is it a worthwhile bill.

If you do not wish to subscribe, you are under no obligation to do so. Supporting KiSS artists may not seem worthwhile to you but it may be worthwhile to others.

Supporting KISS artists

by Ardatha (no login)

Dov wrote "If you do not wish to subscribe, you are under no obligation to do so. Supporting KiSS artists may not seem worthwhile to you but it may be worthwhile to others."

I have been reading on various sites the complaints of people who don't think Otaku World should be a subscription site, and I disagree. The cost of a subscription, even at its highest, does not truly support KISS artists because they still have to keep their day jobs. However, it does allow Otaku World to keep an archive of a hobby I have recently picked up. I gladly subscribe for the opportunity it gives me to pick up, roughly twice a month, the newest and best dolls available. Whether you want to pay or not is your own decision, and I made mine to pay. I used to spend hundreds of dollars per month on my horses. A subscription to Otaku World is a lot cheaper and I can play with the KISS dolls all year round. They don't buck either!

Re: Supporting KISS artists

"does not truly support KISS artists because they still have to keep their day jobs"

That's true but I meant "support KiSS artists" in the sense of supporting their ability to distribute the dolls they make.

Many of the best KiSS artists have tried to distribute their dolls through their own websites but, because of the bandwidth costs, wound up having to only distribute one doll at a time or no dolls at all. So those artists would either have to sell individual subscriptions for their own websites to meet the costs or they can join together with other artists on Otaku World so that one subscription can cover the distribution costs of all the artists who want to participate.

Selling a subscription for one artist's website is certainly a reasonable idea but it can be much harder to get people to buy it when they only get the work of one artist and it means a lot of extra work running the site for that artist.

I understand...

by (no login)

I understand why you would want to share, since Otakuworld has many great kiss dolls, but I also understand why you have to pay for it. It costs money to keep up a website, and the price you're asked for is very reasonable. Although I don't have a subscription, I would like to, but the only money I have is cash-no credit cards or checking accounts, so I can't use PayPal. If you want kiss dolls so bad, go to the artists' websites. Some artists do post their dolls on their website, and a couple even have made a whole bunch of their's available, yet has only sent a select few to Otakuworld, and those end up being the lesser-quality ones(!!). Plus, if Dov finds you sharing an account with someone, their account will be deleted, which will help you make some enemies quickly. So if you want the dolls that bad, buy yourself a subscription-it'll be worth it.

Found it yesterday

While I found it yesterday it means I missed the first few days of the season - and I'll miss several more when the family goes to Mexico for about a week. I wish there was some easy way to get them all at the end of Advent, but it hasn't happened in prior years so I'm doubtful if it will happen this year.
