I have a 91 Camaro RS with a 305 TBI manual. After it has been sitting for a while and i start it, whiteish blue smoke rolls out the exhaust. Also if i let it idle for about 5 mins then rev it up a bit, it smokes here too. My car also overheats when driving intown. Although no lights have come on saying its too hot, the gauge is touching the red area. When this happens, there is a loss in power a great deal and it smokes easier. I know that it does burn oil a little bit, would it be the rings or what? And why does it over heat so bad? One more thing though, when the engine is cold, there is a ticking noise that it makes when revved up or while accelerating. This happens until it warms up a bit, then goes away. The ticking noise gets faster when the rpms go up. Some please help with my problems. Thanks alot.
If your getting the smoke after it sits and then goes away after runnuing for a short period then taht sounds like you have worn valve guides. As the car sits the oil seeps through your valve guides and into your cylinders. My 85 IROC likes to heat up in town also. I think they all do! But, I would make sure your fan works first, 2nd cooling fan relay. Or go to Jegs or Summit and they have Temp Sending Units that will kick your fan on at a much lower temp than the factory Unit. The valve noise could be trouble if it doesn't go away. Try using Slick 50 or something for those cold starts.
