i have an 89 IROC 305FI TPI and one day it just wouldnt start. no click or anything. its like someone ripped the heart right out!! replaced starter and battery is good. any solutions???
I have had the same problems. Usually it would not start after being driven and trying to start a few minutes later. I decided that I would replace the solenoid and install a heat shield because my IROC has a 5.7 and the Y pipe runs right by my solenoid. After doing so the car won't start at all. If I run a jumper between the battery terminal and the S terminal on the solenoid the starter spins like a top! I checked the voltage on the trigger wire at the solenoid and it only had 6 volts when connected. I took it off of the solenoid and it read 12 volts. I also bypassed the neutral safety switch with no result. I have the OEM service manual, and it said if the starter doesn't turn over after bypassing the neutral safety switch that there is a fault with the purple wire between the switch and the solenoid. The wire seems to check out fine though. Now I think it may be a problem with the VAT key system. Please let me know if you have any insight on this. Thanks
Hey, on my 89 IROC (a total pile) I had to replace the VATS system, new key, new steering column piece, and theres a computer chip module in the engine which checks the key. All in all about 600 in parts from Chevy... but thats what it sounds like to me.
I had the same problem with my 85 camaro and it ended up being my neutral safety switch so i had to bypass it by attaching a wire from one side to the other and that solved my problem. Good luck.
