The way the VATS system works is, your key has a resistor in it, its resistance value is a certian amount, there are i think 14 different resistance values your key may be. but thats irrevelant, what you want to know is this. when you put the key in the ignition cylinder, you complete a circuit that goes into a module on the car (not sure which one, this is all before my time here but i have seen VATS on a couple of older cars at work). if the voltage the module gets is not the same as the learned value, it thinks you have forced the lock cylinder to rotate and are stealing the car. with out the GM special tool called a VATS interogator i cant tell you whats going to be wrong with your car. its either the lock cylinder, the key, the module, or the wires between the cylinder and the module. a GM dealer can diagnos your car in .5 hours easy. the special tool makes it easy. you plug it up inline between the lock cylinder and the module. it will tell you the resistance value of the key, then simulate that value to verify the computer is working. so if the car cranks you know its the ignition cylinder or the wires in the column somewhere.
