Is it cold down there? It sure is here. It is a little after 10AM and it has just reached 34 degrees. I think last night it got down to around 22/23 degrees. Would you like to have up to the second weather coverage? If so, check out weatherbug.com

Hot lunches refused to some children

by Gerri

I posted this on DCDB a couple days ago. I'd just like to know what adult could sit down with a hot meal at a table with a child with just a p-nut butter sandwich, apple and milk.

The story came from Williamson Dialy News.

Hot lunches refused to some children

ELKINS, W.Va. (AP) - The Randolph County Board of Education is fed up with overdue school lunch bills and has decided not to allow students with bills dating to last year to charge any more hot lunches.

Instead, they get a peanut butter sandwich, an apple and a carton of milk.

''They're getting the minimum nutritional requirement,'' says Food Service Director Lorrayne Corley.

''We do not deny any child a meal. But we can't give them a full meal, because we can't allow them to charge for it.''

The state requires each county to have a collection policy for overdue meal tabs, Corley said. ''Ours was approved by the state. We want to feed the children. That's what our job should be, not collecting bills. Unfortunately, this is now part of it.''

Some parents and teachers say the policy unnecessarily punishes children for bills owed by their parents.

''It just tears me up to see a grade-school child sit down with a cold peanut butter sandwich while all the other kids are having hot meals,'' said a teacher who did not want to be identified.

''It singles them out. It's cruel,'' the teacher told The Inter-Mountain of Elkins.

Corley says, ''We gave the parents ample notice. We sent out bills in May, June, July and August saying we were going to do this. Some parents paid up right away.

''The only reason these kids are getting a peanut butter sandwich now is b°ecause their parents are failing to provide a packed lunch or money for that day's meal. It's the parents that are failing to provide.''

Elkins Middle School Principal David Roth has refused to give students the cold meal.

''Most of our kids are really too young to be responsible with money, and I don't feel it's fair to blame them for their parents' bills,'' Roth said.

A state education official defended the new county policy and said it was not uncommon around the state.

''Charging is a privilege,'' said Richard Goff, assistant director of the state Office of Child Nutrition. ''It should never get to the point where you have to revoke their charge privileges.

''But, if they're a legitimately non-needy family, who could afford to pay but continually neglect to do so, you have to draw a line somewhere,'' Goff said. ''To me, as a parent, that's child neglect, to not pay your child's meal bill after you've been notified.''

The Randolph County Board of Education is pursuing delinquent school meal accounts more than 45 days in arrears through the county magistrate court, Corley said.

Meals cost $1.05 for lunch and 80 cents for breakfast.

I sort of see their point. All the families who can't afford it get free lunch anyway. These children who are charging and never paying the bill are children who bring $5 to candy store and dress better than the teachers do. The kids know that the lunch room has to let them charge their lunch if they don't have money. But what they have to understand is they can't continue to charge day after day. there has to be some kind of consequence or they will never pay. It seems harsh, but what else can they do?

Gerri I Know....

by Waver

A few post back if you will look Shawna was talking about something of this nature a few months back but they seem to think it is a local person doing it, but she was referring to something like this a few months back then I seen it was a hoax so who knows. I know I went to the local tv station WYMT and the Lexington station and they both reported it on their news cast so I don't know what to believe at this point. I'm a coke drinker so I don't worry about it but I think its just a copy cat sick person in our society that needs to get his kicks with attention. Maybe not. I guess we will have to wait this out and see.

I don't drink much pop at all but when I do, I like the Coke in the little bottles and Diet Sprite. My Dad is a Pepsiholic. I told him last night to get rid of his pop.

Seriously though, it would probably have come from a bottling plant in WV if it happened there.

Safe Money e-News Sounds Alarm!

by

Safe Money e-News

November 9, 2002

Dear Safe Money Subscriber,

For the first time in history, most people on Wall Street now wish they could give the Fed's rate cut back to Mr. Greenspan.

"We don't want it any more," they'd say. "It's obviously broken, and may even be a health hazard."

What happened? Why would so many be so unhappy with the very thing they had been PRAYING for all these weeks and months?

Reason: It's backfiring.

Throughout October, Wall Street pundits had managed to convince investors that the economy was OK -- that sales were not sinking, that more big bankruptcies were unlikely, that the corruption crisis was largely behind us and a real stock market recovery
was under way.

Then suddenly, the Fed dropped the Fed Funds rate by a full 50 basis points, sending the signal that all the Wall Street pundits were DEAD WRONG.

There could be only ONE reason the Fed dropped
the rate so aggressively: The Fed saw all the dangers we've been warning you about -- the sinking sales, even bigger bankruptcies ahead, no end to the crisis of confidence.

Dazed and confused investors are asking:

(a) Is the economy WORSE THAN WE THOUGHT?
Answer: YES.

(b) Does the Fed see a growing danger of deflation on the horizon?
Answer: MOST DEFINITELY.

(d) What does that mean for corporate earnings?
Answer: MORE SHARP DECLINES!

(e) What does that mean for my stocks?
Answer: DANGER, DANGER, DANGER!

Investors now realize that the situation is far more grave than Wall Street led them to believe. The economy is at death's door.

The fact of the matter is, though, the Fed's rate cut -- no matter how big -- won't be able to turn this economy around.

Just take a look at these developments ...

* Bellwether Cisco Systems continues to see a soft economy in the months ahead. Cisco CEO John Chambers blamed "an increasing chill among buyers, many of whom are increasingly uncertain of their own prospects." Not only does Chambers see a struggle
for his own company's earnings, but those of its clients as well.

http://www.safemoneyreport.com/home/daily.asp?archive=110702

* Bubbles in the auto and housing markets are ready to burst. Low rates made it financially more feasible for automakers to offer 0% financing deals, and bolstered home sales by driving
down mortgage rates.

But even those markets are collapsing now. Industry-wide auto sales plunged 27% in October from a year earlier -- despite the fact that carmakers offered an average of almost $3,600 in incentives on every vehicle sold. And the number of existing and new homes on the market is at four- and six-year highs.

http://www.safemoneyreport.com/home/daily.asp?archive=110502

* Hiring is stagnant and layoffs are surging! For ten weeks in a row, the four-week moving average of initial jobless claims topped the crucial 400,000 level.

Plus, companies announced plans to slash 176,010 jobs in October -- a whopping 151% more cuts than in September, according to employment firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. As companies execute those layoff plans, the official jobless data should soar.

Things look pretty dismal, I won't be spending near as much this year at Christmas time. Its time for big business to admit they simply can't make profits year after year and stop the high progections when its not possible. If emplyees of a company such as enron isn't aware of their companies earnings how can we expect to be. I do feel sorry for all that lost their savings, they were investing their money on a corporate lie and should get it back.

DITTO "BAD"

by

Agree Lady Lou...

Below are my answers to the Appy News-Express survey questions:

Stories that portray the collective character & vision of folk living in the region.

Also, interested in stories that expose the behavioral aberrations from the 'present norm.'

Also, like factual & hard-hitting reporting on criminal behavior by entrusted fiduciaries holding public office.

Such matters usually pertain to public corruption, or abuses by public office holders.

Also, like to see & read about the degree which illegal drugs are having on the region, more especially, what is being done about the menace?

In summary, I like it when the News-Express reflects like a mirror, a true image of what is actually transpiring, be it GOOD, or BAD.

I emphasize this, because, when people are forced to look into the mirror and admit the TRUTH, where blemishes cannot be denied, they normally resort to: (1) cleaning-up their dirty-laundry, or, (2)Hiding it, which, usually falls under criminal activity.

Hence, making it easier for prosecutors when such criminal activities are exposed.

One other note: IMHO, Pike leaders should be more 'proactive' as it relates to solving the County's problems as they seek to achieve goals on behalf of the people.

Keep up the good work. (:

The whole story will never be told.........

by Gerri

in newspapers. They (I know they do here) always protect and "forget" to publish names and activities when it is the "elite" or "pals".

Drugs are super bad in KY as well as across the border in VA. It's some of the doctors giving out the strongest pain medication, antidepressants, and muscle relaxers for as little as a stumped toe that is the problem. These people get hooked very quickly on this stuff.

Trust me, they will steal, lie and cheat (especially to family) to get their drug of choice. I've seen too many situations.

It's sad, but I put most of the blame on the legalized drug dealers. So much of it gets hidden.

TN STATE INCOME TAX: 70% - 30% CHANCE NO

by

TN state income tax? Not likely, anytime soon.
Many Tennesseans go absolutely rabid when the big spenders in Nashville even mention a state income tax.
Imagine trying to color the big orange, "BLUE."
It would take Davy Crockett to qwell the riots, wouldn't it?
They / we are just about as passionate over the 'insidious' income tax proposal.
Some sources say, "the state could do better financially, with a lottery." But, I doubt it, as they would find a way to squander those funds too.
In a way, when one thinks about it, a lottery is akin to a tax also.
This TN tax issues reminds me of an old saying that goes like this; "The art of taxation consist of so plucking the goose, so as to obtain the maximum amount of feathers with the least possible amount of hissing."
For sure, Tennnesseans have been "HISSING" over this issue for some time now, and rightfully so.
That's my take ... Waver.

Kudos

Hillbilly Hal

True... Geri.
Believe it's 9.5% here in TN. Imagine nearly .10 cents on everything Tennesseans, and others, buy.
I go out of state on major cost items such as 230 yards of carpeting recently.
If one picks-up in Dalton, GA, one has to pay their sales tax.
BUT, I had mine shipped via Averett Exp for $96.00 with ZERO sales tax. Saved about $300.00.
BTW, Becklers is best carpet outlet in Dalton. Been buying from them for years. Saved thousands.
Plus, they sell all kinds of wood flooring, vinyl / tile flooring ect for half, what I could buy it for in Maryville.

once. I loved it, but could never walk in the kitchen with any kind of socks on, especially nylons. My feet were always going out from under me. I damp mopped it everyday and then used a dust mop with Endust. Probably why I couldn't stand up in there.

As clumsy as I am now.....somehow I think I would like to try ceramic. I don't know.....like I said I'm still undecided.

Thanks for your opinion! Every little bit helps.

Are you sure that's why your feet were

by on-looker

slipping out from under you? Sure it wasn't from hitting that "bottle" one too many times so early in the morning??? Now, eveybody before you start getting "riled" up..this is just a little "inside" joke.tehehe. My opinion..I love hardwood..don't really care for the ceramic (don't have either one).

I guess it's just a wait and see issue, But you're right about one thing that's the lottery. they passed it in Ky and all I heard was for Senior Citizens, Schools. etc. To my knowledge these organizations has seen nothing. Now wonder where its going maybe to finance Mr. Patton's Affairs. LOL

Buck Starts Here

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please Help, this will only take a minute:

Jimmy "income tax" Naifeh will try again to be elected Speaker of the House when the next legislative session starts on Jan 14, 2003. If he is elected, Naifeh will continue to run the House like his own private club. Jimmy's lobbyist friends and his lobbyist wife will run the show.

Jimmy Naifeh's number one hidden agenda will be the income tax. It will affect everything he does including who he appoints as committee chairs.

Democrat Frank Buck is also considering a run for Speaker. Please contact Representative Buck and strongly encourage him to run. Frank Buck opposes the income tax. Simply call and leave a brief message of support with his staff or email or fax him. Here is his contact info:

Nashville office: (615) 741-3817
Nashville Fax: (615) 741-4324
Email: Frank Buck

Here are a couple of recent news articles on the race for speaker:
Challenge to Naifeh
Income tax dogs leadership

Election Analysis:

There are 99 members in the TN house of Representatives. 21 members are newly elected. Republicans picked up 3 seats and there are now 45 Republicans and 54 Democrats.

Of the 45 that voted YES on the income tax last year 15 will not return. Of the 30 remaining YES votes, 27 are Democrats and 3 are Republicans. The returning Republicans who voted YES are Steve McDaniels, Raymond Walker, and Bob Patton.

Everyone Listen to Ms Gerri there!!!!

by Anonymous

I know she is involved and has been for a number of years in politics so she knows. That's exactly why Pike County has not accomplished anything in this last sitting Judge Ms Gibson. She didn't want to get involved with the people that could have done alot for our county. Sure wish we could have had someone in there that would have worked for all we could have gotten since this might be our last chance of it.

I just call it like I see it......

by Gerri

Sometimes you have to work with people that you would rather not, but to get the job done, so be it. Grin and bear a little discomfort for the betterment of the county or whatever the goal may be. I've learned that the hard way!

As the old saying goes, "Be careful who's @ss you kick today. It may be the one you have to kiss tomorrow."

We have found........

by Gerri

that alot of people don't want an honest person.

I wasn't with CDR when he ran the first time. We were divorced when he ran for jailor, but I took his campaign pictures and he did radio spots with our son. I still have the campaign negatives in a safe deposit box for David.

We were involved with several campaigns. During that time, the hardest lesson I learned was that people would actually look you in the eye and lie to you. That was one of the hardest things I ever had to realize.

That may sound silly, but it really hurt.

They are sweeping it under the rug. The hospital doesn't want any bad news to get out. They are afraid that if it gets out more people will go some place else.

or must have been involved at one time??? by KILLER BUG

I TOO WORKED FOR THE STATE AND RETIRED FROM THERE. TELL ME ONE THING I VOTED ALL MY LIFE UP UNTIL 5 YRS AGO WHEN I WAS FOR ONE PERSON AND BEFORE THE POLLS CLOSED WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF THE CLOSE OF THE POLL I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL AND TOLD ME WHO WON AND THE EXACT AMOUNT OF VOTES SORRY I DON'T GO ALONG WITH ONE VOTE MAKES A DIFFERENCE. I'VE HEARD THAT SO MUCH I COULD THROW UP AND ANOTHER THING DON'T SAY I DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN BECAUSE I FEEL AS LONG AS I'M A US CITIZEN AND I PAY TAXES I CAN FEEL AND SAY WHATEVER I WANT. REMEMBER FREEDOM OF SPEECH. I WILL NEVER VOTE AGAIN AND YOU TELL ME ONE GOOD PERSON THAT IS RUNNING IN ANY OF THE ELECTION IN THE US THAT DESERVE TO BE VOTED IN. SORRY TO BE SO RUDE BUT YOU HAVE TO BE IN A POSITION IN THE WORLD OF POLITICS TO REALLY UNDERSTAND IT ALL.

Your post...

"you have to be in a position in the world of politics to really understand it all"..Frankly, I don't give a crap who you vote for or the fact that you never want to vote again (that is your right)..and yes, you are very "rude" to insinuate that I might be so "ignorant or uninformed" concerning political platform that you are "above my head". I don't profess to know everything there is to know in the "big, bad world of politics"..and probably, neither do you. That is why we have the right to go to the polls or stay home, vote Democratic, Republican, Independent, etc. By the way, who are you - Paul Patton????????

I, for one, am not upset..

by on-looker

I feel we all make our own choices..the poster insinuated that he/she must have had some "top" post in the party and the reference to Mr. Patton was in fact because he had been making the news of late. I prolly could have used a choice of names, and yes, Clinton would have done, but since he did not hail from the great Bluegrass State I felt my choice appropriate. In the first post I made it clear I live in VA..so that dictates to the fact I would have no say in the elections in KY, right??

Hey, who cares what he does as long as his job isn't affected? Bill Clinton too.....I could care less as long as the job gets done.

Well......

by Gerri

from the response to your post.....sounds like some are bitter when it comes to politics.

I've seen the good and bad in politics. My ex was involved in politics, as well as my present husband. So, I've been interested in it for over 25 years.

I know dirty dealing go on. There are also dirty dealings in just about everything you go at any more. Hey, I say it's a fact of life. I will still continue to vote.

One note: I try to not worry about things that I have no control over. It's not worth it.
