What I think about politics in general.....

by Concerned One

the reason nothing gets done in Pike County is because voters look at the political party instead of looking at their candidates. You voters say, "I have voted ________ party all my life and I guess that I always will".

Folks, that is PLAIN STUPID.

Look at their qualifications. Look at their character. Look at their lives. Are they honest? Are they parents? Do they go to church? What do they really believe? What are they willing to do for us?

VOTE FOR THE PERSON NOT THE PARTY!!!!

You said a mouthful there....

by Gerri

and oh, so true!!!! That's the trouble with politics. It's not just Pike County citizens that vote that way.

Personally, I think all races should be non-partisan.

I know in KY you have to register a party. In VA, you just register to vote. The politicians run on a ticket and that is a shame.

Amen,

hopefully this time in Pike County the voters will send a message "loud and clear" that it is time for a change, and let to them know we are tired of what has gone on for the past. We need to elect people who are qualified for the job, who don't care to take a stand, and who will include the citizens in the decision making process. This forum is great for voicing your opinion, but there are a lot of people who don't have access to a computer. We need to send letters to the editor of the Appalachian News Express encouraging people to go and vote for the person who is qualified and to emphasis that we definitely need a change.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PIKE COUNTIANS?

by Anonymous

For the sake of me I can't understand why everyone is so concerned over the up coming election. It will not be any different than any of the others,One wants this the other wants that one when it comes down to it they are all in the same boat, crooks, cheats, and making money off our tax dollars for nothing and I do mean nothing.Just look at the Judge for the last 3 years what have we accomplished? If you're an honest person then stay out of the politics. If you guys really and I mean really knew how the election was done you would never cast another vote. I know the real truth behind it all and I don't cast a vote since. So wake up you guys will never have anyone that will be a working person judge. Hope I don't step on too many toes.

So, tell us the real truth behind the election that you are privy to and noone else, and what Judge are you talking about, surely not the Judge Executive who fought most magistrates to make water for everyone first priorty. I didn't notice Her being invited to meet with a Gov. who didn't believe that Black Lung was a real disease and who thought a convention center was more important than the water his hometown neighbors are drinking. But oh guess what, now the Gov. believes that Black Lung is real after all, so I guess you do have a point about dishonesty.

I have been close to some politicians myself.

by Sam

I know how some of them operate. The deals under the table, the way the election is won the night before and all the moonshine they have hauled and given away. But, I still vote.

What's wrong with you?

by

Only a small number of people vote in elections. Yes, I agree that many are probably bought the night before with promises of gravel and liquor. However, if the majority of people voted then the politicians would have to be responsible to the majority. This would clean up a lot of wrong doing in itself. If you really want Pike County to change, then you should be encouraging people to vote, instead of discouraging it. Maybe you are a politican yourself and are trying to keep the number of jugs of liquor you will need to buy to a minimum.

I don't think the Gov. saw the error of his ways, I think he just decided to be Senator instead of a coal operator. Everyone needs to vote even if they write someone in..at least do that in protest if theres no candidates that measure up.I agree about the medicare, not everyone has a pension to help them survive and an insurance card to cover medicine, the poor old people sometimes has to decide between medicine and food.

Want Answers? Go for nuggets of truth..

by

Take a stroll to your local public library and check-out "The Law," by Fredrick Bastiat. [French Economist]

Below are some quotes from page 10:

"Man can live and satisfy his wants only by ceaseless labor; by the ceaseless applications of his faculties to natural resources. This process is the origin of property"

"But it is also true that a man may live and satisfy his wants by seizing and consuming the products of the labor of others. This process is the orgin of plunder."

"Now since man is naturally inclined to avoid pain- and since labor is pain in itself- it follows that men will resort to plunder whenever plunder is easier than work. History show this quite clearly. And under these these conditions, neither religion nor morality can stop it."

"When then, does plunder stop? It stops when it becomes more painful and more dangerous than labor."

"It is evident, then, that that the proper purpose of law is to use the power of its collective force to stop this fatal tendency to plunder instead of to work. All the measures of the law should protect property and punish plunder."

Now, "Dear Anonymous, I trust you will see and conclude that the law has been "perverted." Guess what?
We voted it in! We howled for give-aways! Therefore, in essence, we've embraced MARXISM-COMMUNISM whose main tenet is; "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." Profound, huh?

There you have it... through the eyes of Hillbilly Hal nestled in the Tennessee hills near 'Good Old Rocky Top.'

Oh yeah, someone [author-teacher] once told me a long tome ago, "That those that do not read, do not think, and those that do not think, get their thinking done for them." Sounds "Orwellian," doesn't it?

Gee! I wish I had read more.

Kudos, and don't ever give-up by not speaking out.

I like what you are reading. However, I guess that I think of plunder as the big man taking advantage of his power and position and profiting from the little man's work unjustly. From what I understand, you view it as the opposite, those persons living on government assistance plundering from the wealthy. Did I understand you correctly?

Response to Molly's Question

by

Yes Molly, you understood me partially.

What Author Bastiat is saying is; 'the law' has been perverted by legislators that cater and respond favorably to voters that demand payment / sustenance from the government by inflicting "PAIN" [labor] on their fellow citizens. NOT JUST THE WEALTHY!

By PAIN, the author correctly describes labor as being painful.

This process, when abused is immoral, IMHO.

There are instances whereby, we as taxpayers should permit, or vote for candidates that vote for responsible benevolent programs that assist the less fortunate or disabled.

We as individuals should practice this also toward our neighbors. After all, God commands us; "to love our neighbors," Doesn't He?

I trust my comments clarify the author's thesis, and my personal sentiments on the subject to your satisfaction.

You are right, one person alone can't change things, but

by Gaye Harris

if we were to elect several who were willing to do right, then maybe, just maybe, things will change. But, we can't give up voting, we have to keep trying. Despite all it's flaws,I would much rather have an opportunity to vote then have none and wake up one day under dictatorship. As for those people who have never worked and are on drugs and in jail, maybe you should let the Social Security Administration know. Under social security law now you CANNOT receive SSI benefits if you are found to be addicted to drugs and alcohol.

One politician....or one voter....

by Gerri

isn't going to change the system. But I am a strong believer in voting.

What about the millions the Taliban gave to the top US officials for their campaigns? (Check it out.) We complain about about a pint of liquor or $10.00 for a vote? We had better be worrying about the country as a whole and do the best we can by voting "for the lesser of two evils" instead of one or two local politicians.

Don't get me wrong.....I love politics. I know how dirty it is...first hand, but I still vote.

I also know that everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, just as I am entitled to have mine.

Cheney

by

On the subject, did you know that VP Dick Cheney profited from the last attack on Iraq? It is true. One of the companies he owns sold the equipment, at a profit, to Iraq to get their oil business up and running again. It was done through the foreign division of his company, so that it was technically legal, however was it a moral thing to do? And I can't help but question the present administrations attacks of Iraq, Do they need to sell more equipment? If Iraq is the enemey of America, then Americans, especially VP's don't need to do business with them.

I agree with you on alot of your issues, but this issue with cheney is only a touch of what goes on. Remember when Bush campaigned for the working people, well low and behold the big credit card companies that he took campaign funds from are the ones he is helping like the new bankruptcy law to help cover them etc. It would be hard for any of them to do away with all the vp's that give money to them for their compaigns, I think we have Freedom Of Speech no matter if we vote or what, but I also think that if I pay taxes I have a voice in whatever topic I want.

politics and money

by

Until the major press organizations begin reporting all of the news it is very hard for people to know what is really going on. I get a lot of my information from a publication called the "Progressive Populist". They report news that never makes news. Another good magazine I like to read is Mother Jones. And I agree, if you pay taxes then you have Freedom of speech. How many corporations pay zero in taxes each year? I bet the majority don't pay anything. This morning on Sunday with Charles Kuralt, the op ed piece was on the huge refunds that Enron Corporation got. It is disgusting.

money or politics

by

The question is what to do to take back our government. I am not advocating a civil war or anything like that, but we have got to start holding people accountable for what they do in office, both locally and nationally. I was very involved with a campaign a few years back campaign finance reform. If we could get big money out of politics then the little person has a chance of making a difference. I guess we are getting some campaign finance reform as a result of the Enron disaster, but I'm afraid it is too little too late. It galls me to hear people like Mitch McConnell talk in favor of keeping corporate cash in elections, saying that to stop it would be to deny these corporations their freedom of speech. He has made this statement, seriously. I think it is ridiculous to state that a corporation has a right to freedom of speech. Only citizens should have that right.

by

Molly,

I have a question...

RE: "This morning on Sunday with Charles Kuralt, the op-ed piece was on the huge refunds that Enron Corporation got. It is disgusting." [your post]

Since Charles Kuralt is deceased, how could he have been a factor in an op-ed piece on "CBS Sunday Morning" recently commenting about ENRON?

Are you sure it was Kuralt, or could it have been another personality, 'editorializing' on the program Kuralt started?

If you really know what goes on before the election,

by Gaye Harris

let us in on the secret, or better yet, why don't you do something about it. That's the problem now. We need people to encourage voting instead of discouraging them. As for honest people staying out of politics, we need to encourage honest people to run for office. As the old saying goes, evil prevails when good people sit back and do nothing. I hope this time the veil is removed from the voters' eyes and that they see what has been going on, and that they go to the polls and send a message "LOUD AND CLEAR" we are tired of what has been going on.

write up some issue questions for the candidates (similar to the newspaper interviews), e-mail them to them and give them a deadline for a response. Tell them you are going to post them on a local discussion board. See what they have to say.

Thanks, I have only had the van less than a year, I bought it used but it has really been taken care of.

Daylight Saving Time

by Shawna

Does anyone else hate DST? I don't mind it in the fall when we borrow an hour, but I hate to "pay it back" in the spring. Time is too tight for me as it is. I need as much as I can get...especially to rest. ha ha

Gerri...

by CCG

it was very nice to meet you yesterday (and now I have a face to put with the name/post). My hands were almost froze off but it was worth it - Female Ranger said they did really good.

You too.....

by Gerri

it was nice meeting you. I know it was so cold! When we loaded everything in the "Ranger" truck, I went to my truck to call home and had intended to go back grocery shopping. My feet just would not carry me back up that parking lot. I came home!

I talked to her mother-in-law, which is not DCG. She was telling me that they did real well. Mom-in-law don't get into discussion boards much. She reads every once in a while, but that's about it.

At least now, we know we're both about half cracked!

My feelings exactly...

by CCG

I told Mom-in-law that it was nice to meet people who had more sense than I do (which don't take a lot as you can tell - I mean to have more sense than I do). You never did get to tell me if you live on a farm or just have a lot of animals. My family has a cabin that is not too far from where you live. We used to go there a lot but now that the girls are teen-agers we don't go a lot - they aren't into the "outdoor plumbing" thing.

We have.......

by Gerri

about 20 head of cattle with 9 more little ones expected, 2 horses, 1 mule and about 20 (7 of them are babies ready to go to a good home)dogs all on about 200 acres. Oh, I forgot about the chickens. He doesn't have that many. The foxes, hawks and coyotes like them too good and hubby said he wasn't going to try to keep them anymore after these are gone.

Another thought........

by Gerri

Sometimes it's quite fun not to have the "indoor plumbing thing". There's plenty of room there around the mountain for lots of things!! I'm sure there are many couples and "others" that can attest to that. It's like NYC here on the weekends and the summer...especially plantin' and harvestin' time! Know what I mean?

Once we found a snake that had

by CCG

somehow gotten into the cabin (even with the metal door) and that was the end of the "week-end adventures" - my oldest one refuses to use any bathroom that doesn't "flush". Other than mow I don't think we spent any time around there this summer. Oh yeah, tell Mom-in-law another person I REALLY enjoyed meeting was the Joe guy from the boat dock (I forgot exactly who she told me he was - but he was a sweetie (I guess I am old enough to get by with calling him that, right?????).

I will probably see him before she does. I ws talking to his wife this afternoon.

The snake would have ended my stay as well. I have nightmares about them things.
