Sum-Sum-Summertime. I hope everybodyu has a chance to goof off this summer. Remember how great it was being a kid, and having the whole summer ahead of you? I spent a lot of time Downtown and in Branch Brook. And one summer I attended the Roseville Avenue School summer program. I think we made wallets or something. Then there was one week at Camp Mohican.
Summertime for me as a kid was in my yard mostly, in our pool. Some of you reading this may have even been lucky enough to have enjoyed our pool. I knew it was the smallest in the neighborhood but boy it was really small 15 rd. The Malanga's next door had an 18 rd and Betty and Akky behind us had a 24 rd. We did also have entire family gatherings up at McDonald's beach. A Lake somewhere in the mountains. Naturally though, our picnics either home or there consisted of eggplant parm., sausage & peppers, veal & peppers, ziti, maybe a hotdog & hamburger now and then. My grandfather worked for the bakery that made white castle buns so naturally that's what we used for our rolls. He would brings them by the box full. There were the years finances made it possible for us to vacation down at the Wild Wood Beach. We would stay at the Oceanic Hotel. Those were the best ones! The happiest ones for me For those of you who don't know me that well, I just simply love the beach. The only thing I didn't like as a little girl at the shore, was getting sand inside my bathing suit. And I still don't fancy it to this day..............Have a great summer everyone!
But don't eat white castle burgers not good for you!
I remember the summers on N. 6th Street. Watching you walk your grandmother's dog. I loved Cindy. Oh, John, where did all this time go?
I look forward to seeing you soon. I have lots of pictures to send.. from our class reunion and I also have the class picture from 1965 Reggie Rose's class.
Long time no see. Thanks for stopping in; I've added you to the Members List, con mucho gusto.
I remember Sixth Street most fondly. I spent more time there than I did at my house on Second Street. Grandma Crowley was a great old gal, and I thank her for any sense of refinement I have. Her house was full of great old furniture, books, 78 rpm records, and of course, delicious snacks. Cindy was a great little Cocker Spaniel, too. I rememebr your mob hanging out across the street. And of course your dad was the scoutmmaster. It was a great neighborhood. I don't know where the time went, but it was mostly well spent.
Deb, I'm looking forward to seeing you in October at one of the reunions.
Summer for me in Newark.....Lemon ice at Nick's on 7th street and Park Ave. Fire hydrantes being opened on the corners....Everyone sitting on thier front porches.
Playing hid-go-seek till the wee hours of 10pm. The corners being full of people hanging-out. Trips to Sandy Hook...Danny being brunt to a crisp, and Nanny giving my mother the Irish evil eye while putting diluted baking soda on Danny's brunt shoulders. Didn't notice the heat much back then, the lightening bugs. Activites at Garfield school.....competing with other intercity recreation departments with the dances etc. Fire works at the stadium...vacationing with the Keeles(Barbara,Beau,Frankie and Roseanne). All good memories.
Nice to see you? Well at least see your name anyway. Are you still in the area? I remember the liquor store. It was Pere's for a long time. There was some kind of club associated with it and the entrance was on 7th Avenue heading toward 7th Street.
I also remember the candy store/luncheonette. The woman who ran it was named Cindy. We called it Cindy's although it was Rausch's or something.
The other corner had the White Circle Hamburger place that has previously been discussed. And the McEvoy had their "pool" on the other corner. I can remember looking longingly at that beautiful blue water as I passed. How I wished I lived in the McEvoy for even just a couple of hours on those hot summer days!
I believe we are talking about 2 different areas. You are mentioning the area of 7th Ave & Roseville. I was responding to the comment about Nicks store at Park Avenue & 7th Street.
I asked about the Liquour Store at Park Avenue & North 11th Street which Jeff Schick recalls as Franklin Liquours.
Yep, I was talking about a different corner. Hah, new game, name the nearest liquor store? Or, how fast should debbie get her glasses? I live in Glen Ridge, right next door to Clifton. Funny we haven't run into each other at Home Depot or somewhere.
Tim, I don't think that liquor store had a name! But I remember rounding up empty soda bottles 2 cents for the small and 5 cents for the quart (no liters then)and buying a Dr. Pepper. Then going up to the store on 13th and Park, careful to avoid the 13th street gang--John (not Jimmy)Reily et al, and using the left over money to buy maybe 20-30 pounds of penny candy. I think Bobby Keer lived upstairs from the liquor store. Take care. MarK
