Great site on St Rose of Lima and Roseville! Although I didn't attend St Rose (was born at St Barnabas & raised Down Neck; moved to Kearny in 1961 at the tender age of 9), will always remember that area with
fondness; still attend Mass at the Cathedral Basilica, and have seen how vastly it has changed...Am involved in the EMS field and am seeking your help: Circa 1962 or so, the Roseville First Aid Squad ran out of the old 2nd (now North) police precinct. Their blue & white International ambulance was usually parked on 6th at Orange..Do you or anyone remember the Squad? I believe they ceased operations by the late 60's. Am looking for former members, etc. ... am currently doing some research on the volunteer EMS units that serviced Newark during the 1960s/70s. Any help will be appreciated. Many
thanks in advance!
Craig, I know the Roseville First Aid Ambulance Squad. That was it's official name. It started in 1961. My father Patrick F. Daly, Gene Ross, Gene Ensor, Mr. Huber, Charlie Thomas, Fitzsimmons, first name I've forgoten, but we just called him Fitz. Kelly Martinez, Joe Martin, Anne Marie Santanbrogio, who later became Mrs. Joe Martin, Joe Shevolin, Dorothy Regan, Miles Sweenty, Chalie Matone, and others who's names I have forgoten. The man who organizated it was James G. O'brien of Vailsburg. He was asked to start the Squad, by Father Flusk. We started out in the old bank on Gray and Orange Streets. We had several ambulances either loanded or given to us to start us up. Then I think in 1962 or 1963 the Roseville Lions Club gave us that new International truck style ambulance. It was at the time state of the art. Oh by the way I was also a member of the squad joining with my father. In 1963 we moved to the store front on 6th. Street and Orange Street, which was across the street from the 2nd. Precient(later the North District Station) of the Newark Police Department. We had no affilation with the Police Department. The ambulance were parked in from of the office while we were working, but were moved to the funeral home paring lot on Roseville Avenue across from the McEvoy Apartments. I think they stop operations around 1968 or 69. My email address is Bulldog6114@Aol. Dan
Craig, After reviewing what I wrote in my first reply I noticed that I left out a part. We didn't move to the storefront at 6th. Street and Orange Street in 1963. First we moved to the basement of the VFW Post on No. 7th. Street. It was called the Connolly Post. I remember it was always hot down there because the boiler was right in the same room. Oh by the way I neglected to mention that my brother Ed Daly was also a member. Also Bob and Betty Bender. Bob was a heavyset man who worked at Rollo's making the pizza in the window. He used to toss the dough into the air. He was a real showman with his work. He and Betty lived over Tillman's store on Orange Street. Other members were the Meeker brothers. Richie and Tom. Richie I know went on to join the Newark Fire Department and the last I knew he was a Battalion Chief. The Squad was setup with a Board of Directors and a Board of Officers. There was a President, Vice President, Secertary, Tresurer, and Trustees. The officers were a Chief, Two Captaind, Three Lieutenants and three Segeants. Each officer had a specific job to do. Administration, Equipment, First Aid Training. We made many trips to the hospitals and helped many people. A job done well by all Bulldog
