When the City Subway was opened in 1935, several "suburban" streetcar lines were routed through it, including the 21 Orange. There were two 21 lines, one that left the Subway at Warren Street and went up W. Market Street, and another that turned off at Orange Street and continued to Orange. This 1951 photo was taken approaching 7th Street, looking west. Grandma Crowley called these the Good Old Days.

How well I remember looking out of the window from Sister Rita Gertrude's second grade class and watching the sparks ignite the air as the trolley screetched to a halt in front of the Tivoli...

I was a little ahead of you '51 but I certainly remember my second grade. Did you ever get a piece of that green broom stick she used to whack us with?

The Newark trolleys stopped running in the early 50's and bus service was expanded. I now live in Houston where $250 million was just spent over the last 2 years to provide "light rail" to downtown. Looks like no idea is really origional. The only thing different is the name!
