Having had more free time than usual lately, I've just compiled a collection of old Orange Street photos and have installed them on the site in a section titled Historic Orange Street. It's at http://www.thecanteen.com/orange01.html . Enjoy.

Another Job Well Done

John, you are to be congratulated once again for your efforts on this latest addition to the website. These interesting photos, combined with your insightful commentary, have made for a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday morning. More of the same would be most welcome.

Good Job

January 5 2003, 9:28 PM

Enjoyed the pictures. Never realized that the subway was built on the bed of the Morris Canal. The Canal here in Hackettstown is overgrown with weeds.Of course there have been many years of discusing "saving the canal site" but, this has not come to be.The Canal is the border of Hackettstown and Independence .My father graduated from St.Roses and then from Central High, which in those days was an accomplishment. He was also an usher at the church for years.I came upon his St. Rose pin recently while I was packing to move.My Aunt Frances (not a favorite) was the librarian at St.Roses.The Tivoli always reminds me of Monsignor Gormley yelling in chrurch that if he saw you going in there to see the sinful pixs you would go to hell.Remember "Advocate" The listings of the approved movies were published there. Also enjoyed seeing no.9th Street were I lived, but by then the train was underground. You also mentioned Rattners conf.store.They latter had a toy store next to it (I think) Keep up the good work and Happy new Year.

Those listings were compiled by "The Legion of Decency." They were also posted on a bulletin board at the side (Gray St) exit of the Church. Incidentally, Marie, did you ever have a "Bermuda Shorts" party at your house around '58 or '59? I seem to remember my brother Terry going to your house for a party, but it may have been at someone else's house. I don't know why that memory just popped out. As I remember, everyone (boys and girls) attending had to wear Bermuda shorts, which were relatively new to the fashion scene.

Thanks, Marty

Glad you like the piece. I wish I could find photos between First and Fourth streets, and from Gray to 14th streets. I'll keep looking, though, and add them as I find them. I was happy to see that one photo that shows your old place, Marty, across from Larry's. I believe you can even see his truck in the picture!
