Happy Ash Wednesday!

This brings back memories of mite boxes, giving up candy, and Stations of the Cross every Friday.
I still try to give up something each year- but I am having too many senior moments to make it all the way through.
Anyone recall their favorite Lenten promise?

I promised to give up castor oil. I haven't had it since. That was 42 years ago.

My 15 year old daughter gives up vegetables each year. I try to explain you should give up something you like. Doesn't work.

Mite Boxes

March 5 2003, 4:44 PM

I remember those cute little boxes. They had clever inspirational sayings on them, like "Doing things by halves they say is wrong, but not a half-dollar for old Hong King!" Funny, the things we remember.

Anyway, this Lent I resolve to give up fast-forwarding through those FBI warnings at the beginning of videos.

Hi Eileen;

Saving pagan babies? Alas- I am still working on getting time off my sentence in hell.. remember
making the sign of the cross was worth 10 days but if you made it with Holy Water you got 100 days, nine First Fridays got you a priest at your deathbed and Lent was the big time to accumulate indulgences.

Laura,
Were those indulgences plenary or partial? Eileen

Pagan babies

April 11 2003, 3:13 PM

I seem to remember a poster of a tree on the bulletin board, and everytime we got together the five bucks to "save" a "pagan baby" the nun would put a little sticker of some Asian or African kid's head up in the branches. Of course I may be misremembering.

Give up

April 11 2003, 10:56 AM

I remember well the incident when I was rushed
to Presbyterian Hospital around the corner from
SRL because I succumbed to anxiety attacks from
eating a hot dog on Good Friday.
