Speaking of the Wonder Bar, there it is on the left. We're on Orange Street, looking at the intersection of Roseville Avenue. No St. Rose church yet, but you can see the cupola of the school down the street. I'd say this is about 1920.

What is the occasion? July 4th??

Why all the bunting? Maybe it's St. Patricks Day which is a national event in Newark.
Inquiring minds want to know and are really sick of work today.

Observations

March 7 2003, 6:31 PM

I can't believe how long that style mail box has been around.

In looking at the photo close up, I'm convinced that the person standing on the sidewalk is a woman wearing a skirt, stockings, and one of those boxy small-rimmed hats, and man walking behind her. (I think he just 'goosed' her and she didn't feel it through her heavy woolen jacket.) There appears to be NO motorized vehicles and there is a cop standing on the corner with his back to the street (right side of the street). The sidewalks are clean. There are several barrels on the sidewalk opposite the mailbox. What else do you see?

the occasion

I would hazard a guess that it might have been some time in 1917-1918, with the bunting perhaps connected to a World War I theme; our entry into the war, a war bond drive, Armistice Day, etc.

Washington or Lincoln's Birthday

I think that the decorations are up for the two presidents. It's the winter, and if it was in November the tree's would still have some leaves on them.

good guess

Let's go with Armistice Day. A family connection: my paternal grandmother, who I never met obviously, died on Armistice Day. Nora Kunzelman. There was a big influenza epidemic that killed tens of thousands of people that fall..
I never met my paternal grandfather either. He died in 1932. Supposedly he was a Newark Policeman. Can you look that up, Dan or Martin? Name was Frank McCree
sr. My dad 1918-1962 was jr. and I am the third. there will be no fourth. Alledgely there was a police captain named Bill McCree around the turn of the centruy.
Back in 1964, my boss in ladies shoes at Orhbachs asked me if I was related to Frank McCree, the traffic cop?

On the net I found out there are about 1200 McCree's in the U.S. About half are black. The whites are located mainly in the Memphis, Tennessee area, but no one knows the story of the Newark Police McCree'??
For some reason I said no. is there a Newark Police website?
