From the NPL archives comes this moment in time. It's May 1941, and atop the City Hall annex is Mr. Gervaise Chittick, engineer of the Newark Defense Council, testing the largest air raid siren in the city. Every neighborhood was equipped with a siren; who remembers where Roseville's was?

Was it on top of our school, SRL? I seem to remember it being there.

Air Raid Siren

My guess (truly a guess) is the Roseville Armory. I can also remember the periodic air defense spotlights searching the skys over Roseville (for Russian Migs I assume). I remember one evening when the lights were roaming the sky, my parents took me for a walk up to Orange Street and the spotlights were placed on the corner by the Uncle Sam's Shoe Store.

Air Raid Siren- Engine Co. #15

John I put this in before but it got lost in cyberspace. I know there was one on top of the firehouse on Park Avenue near No.6th. Street. This is where Engine Co. #15 and Truck Co. #7 are housed.

The Russians are Coming!

I think Martha is right. I also seem to remember it being on top of or right next to the school. The whole building shook when the siren went off. No memory of grammar school in the 50's and early 60's can be made without the "duck and cover" drill.

There was also a siren at Park Ave and 11th Street on the roof of the old United Advertising building. I remember it quite well. I lived across the street and every saturday at noon it went off, just as Sky King was coming on TV

That's right! "Out of the blue of the western sky comes . . . Sky King!" Brought to you by Nabisco.
