This blows the theory derived from a spirited debate.
The Legion of Decency was probably the brain child of Fulton Sheen and his trusty blackboard. The Holy Name Society & the Rosary Society reviewed the movies. Somewhere the Altar Society & the Knight of Columbus were thrown in also. Only thing we could agree on it was not regional.

Legion of Decency

The Legion of Decency was formed in 1934 and was church wide. It was a based on a pledge to never go see the movies listed or even go to the theaters that showed the movies. The Rosary Society, Holy Name etc weren't involved except to support the choices dictated by the church. As time wore on the League lost power and was replaced by later organizations. As an example the list always included any movie with Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley or any hint of extra-marital sex. I remember Msgr Carney preaching from the altar against the Frank Sinatra movie The Detective, and the Tivoli because it showed the movie.

That's democracy! We all have the right to speak up. If no one challenged the voices who spoke up in the 50's (the Legion of Decency, the Rosary Society and others with their selected agendas (I spent many a Friday on on my knees praying the rosary with the "Ladies" of the neighborhood,) who's to blame?
If there is fault, it's the fault of a lazy mind. God gave us a brain to use. I believe my education at St. Rose taught me how to use that gift.

Amen, Stephen! If the standards promulgated by the Legion of Decency still held sway, I don't think there would be very many movies (or TV shows, fo that matter) that would make it onto the "morally unobjectionable" list. (Which isn't to say that I necessarily LIKE much of what passes for entertainment these days...)
