These bridges over the Erie-Lackawanna cut were a lot of fun to climb on/hide behind. This particular one was just a stone's throw from a house we lived in for a couple years, 180 N. Second Street -- the third house from the left. So I have a few good memories of this particular one.
My guess would have been Bathgate Place but looks like Dennis won the prize.
The sight of those rivets brought back memories. We HAD to climb up those bulkheads and walk across the top every trip home from school? Easier on lunch hour because we didn?t have to hand off our bookbags.
I can still picture grabbing the steel and getting the tips of my shoes on those rivets and actually climbing up the thing rivet by rivet. (Today I wouldn?t have a prayer). The steel is layered, so the grip was harder as you climbed.
Yes, that's exactly how we clambered up them, Bobby. I came across this photo in the New Jersey Collection room at the NPL; it was stashed in the Railroads file. My last time there I also uncovered some interesting Newark City Subway photos I'll be adding to that section soon. It's always a productive visit to the NPL, especially when I get to have coffee with Dennis M.
