In all fairness, since we took a look at Vulcania's, we should honor its "uptown" rival,
Rallo's Restaurant. In this photo from the NPL's Berg Collection it's just where we remember it, near N. Seventh Street, right next to
Brohman's dress shop.
(Brohman's, of course, will always be remembered, not for the dowdy frocks my grandmother bought there, but for the mythic horse-through-the-window episode, which if I recall correctly happened on Halloween in about 1961 or '62.)
From the few times we ate in Rallo's, I do recall the food being quite good -- but still maintain Vulcania's had the best pizza.
