Hello everyone. On 7th Ave, a few blocks east of Roseville Ave there is a beautiful, old, building with a sign on it: AlAnon. What was this building originally, and is it still in use as an AlAnon, AA, meeting place?
Jule, that building started life as the Roseville Athletic Club. When Rosevillians apparently became more interested in alcohol than athletics, it became the Al-Anon building.
Another interesting historical note about this building - it served as a voting precint polling station for many years. It's the first place I ever voted. Also, I remember the AA used to have a big open house Christmas party with Santa every year there. I used to walk by this building going home from SRL. There used to be a vacant lot across the street (before the Post Office was built), site of many a sandlot baseball game.
Wow What memories, In that building there were 4 bowling lanes in the basement, on Thursday and Friday nights, Frankie Hunt, from 5th street, and I would set up pins for thier leagues. That was before automatic pin setters. We made 17 cents per game and at the end of the night we had a 2 or 3 dollars (plus tips)and a sore back. As for the lot across the street, we played a lot of baseball there. Broke a couple of car windows that were parked too close. Not me.(smile)it was the other guys.
