At First Friday the other day, Diana Puccio asked me to look up her old address. I did find some shots of Bathgate Place in the Berg Collection, and along with a couple from SRL I put them together in a little gallery. Diana, I hope you see your old place there.

Bathgate place

Nice coverage John. I think I see the office of my old dentist, Dr. Mulvaney, there (lots of cavity drilling horror in there ), and there was also the house with the store in front, next to the quirky house, where I think the Ruanes lived.

Good God! We were just talking about Bathgate place and Dr. Mulvaney on Saturday. He used to donate time to SRL and give us check ups in the nurse's office... Classes would stand in line out in the hallway waiting for a chance in the chair. Then of course we'd have to go over to Bathgate Place and get our cavities drilled. Today's Star Ledger had an article about the fear of needles. I remember being so afraid of needles that I'd let Dr. Mulvaney drill and drill with no Novocain... so those pictures of Bathgate Place sent chills up my spine as you can imagine.

Ms Reilly

Now that I think of, and if my memory serves me, I think she did have red hair. I remember the day she returned from service after the war ended. She got drafted into service because of her occupation. She was a kind lady, everybody loved her.

Zoning issues in Newark

December 17 2004, 7:45 PM

Wow - now that picture brings up memories! In last Sunday's Star Ledger there is a story about the Residential/Commercial Zoning in Newark. I recall my street having the Russo's Soda delivery business, Tubello's Bell-Magneto(whatever the hell that was) a gas station opposite the Tennis Courts and parking garages on both 7th Ave and 1st St. I seem to remember candy stores in the middle of several of the blocks and over by Sussex school- like folks just added on a room in front and started selling.
We are involved with a zoning dispute here in my town since my next door neighbor named his house, started renting rooms and having weddings and all sort of affairs, so I am a bit more interested in this subject but I had blocked out all the businesses that were right next door in some cases in Roseville.
I don't recall any of them bothering us in any way either but of course people didn't work evenings, Sundays or holidays.

Joe Dr. Mulvaney brought memories that me and my brothers would rather forget, he didn't beleive in saving teeth he seemed to think pulling was the answer. We had to pass his office that was only a few doors from our house and that was painful. I saw someone else was talking about St Rose's school nurse Mrs.Rielly I was scared to death of her. Do you remember Mrs Clark who taught in St Rose's. She lived in the MacEvoy apts.

Hi Linda

January 7 2005, 2:16 PM

Sorry to say Dr. Berg didn't immortalize a lot of Seventh Avenue -- almost nothing that I recall seeing. But the next time I am at the NPL I will scrutinize the collection closely to see if I can find a picture of your old house. Nice to see you again!

Mrs Clark

January 8 2005, 4:16 PM

Yup, I remember Mrs Clark. She taught 6th Grade, I think. I had her in class and the only substantive thing I can recall was that she seemed to be obsessed with the Colyer or Collier (sp?) brothers, two NYC eccentrics who lived with a zillion pounds of old newspapers and other crap in their house.

I seem to recall she tried to pull a kid's hat off when we were going down the stairs (no hats in school) at the end of the day, and the kid ducked and she fell down and broke her ankle -- that may have been some other teacher, though. Memory fails at this age.

Joe Bilby

PS: I also remember that back in the 1950s one of the Ruane kids (I think) got hit by a car crossing 7th Avenue. Was it Mike? I had never seen anyone get hit by a car before and I was pretty upset about it. So much so that I can still recall it. Of course later in life I saw people get blown up and shot, but that I've pretty much got over.

Hi Katherine,

Just saw your message. We lived upstairs from the Commercio's. My brother's name is Anthony and my twin sister is Kathleen. My dad, Sal was a butcher at Wotiz Meats on Central Avenue. Julie Ann Commercio had a serious crush on my brother Anthony. I think we have movies of them receiving First Holy Communion together. I think there was another sister Phyllis and maybe a brother. The Powers lived next door to us and I thought you lived on the other side of us. I think I recall the Anderson's in some gray house near the corner toward St. Rose. We left St. Rose when I was 7 but continued to commute from Union until my brother graduated in 1964. My mom, Ray was a den mother for the cubscouts at St. Rose. We had some great times there. We had many family parties in that long driveway of ours.

Great memories here.
I remember a candy store in one of the houses you photographed. Not the "quirky little house next to the tracks," but the one to the left of it. I remember a chain across the parking lot behind the Food Town and Uncle Sams's Shoes that clanged in the breeze. I also remember a big dog--maybe a German Shepherd mix--that sprawled in the sidewalk on Bathgate Place near the candy store. We called him "King Tut" because he seemed to feel entitled to the sidewalk. He would not move for anyone.Mary Jane McNally SRL Class of '62
