We've seen this photo before but I get a bang out of it. One of Newark's Finest, our Marty Kimball, poses beside his damaged prowl car. I think it was hit by a meteorite, right Marty?

Yes John, the damage was caused by a UFO of some sort. But it was a long time ago, and the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
And Bob, the gun is there if you look closely. Not that close, Bob.

wow...what a picture..makes me think about the p.a.l. that they had on the second or third floor of the 2nd precinct... on a wednesday afternoon we'd shoot hoops and stuff...
Joe Wiengardner ( he cooked at Holly's Resturant on 1st street in the 60's and lived on 5th street a half a block south of sussex ave ) was an artist with the punching bag... that was when the horses' were still stabled there...
Last time I went thru there, coming across 6th street after a b-day party in Belleville, I was stopped and asked what I was doing in the area......I got a cross-eyed look when I said I was heading for 280 and that I used to live on that empty lot I pointed at..........

Law Enforcement Guys

February 18 2005, 10:27 PM

Of course, the first to come to mind is Bob Davis, Sr. who headed up investigations for the Public Defender's Office, following his career with the Newark Police. Dan Daly's also retired Newark. There's John McCree with the postal authorities. Richie Sivertsen, retired Newark; I'm not sure if he's a member per se, but I know he reads the postings. Mark Clark's dad Bill retired from the job. I think Rico does something with the feds, but I'm not sure what. It's so secret even he doesn't know.
Bill Murphy also retired from Newark.
Those are all I can think of; apologies to anybody I left out.

Hey Marty. All this talk about Newark Cops got me thinking about my Uncle, Tommy Flanagan. He was a Newark Det. and really sweet guy. I believe St. Joseph's was his grammar school.

RE: Newark's Finest

Mike, I think we missed with Jerry O'Connor and sons... They lived down by Essex Catholic in St. Michael's parish. We just missed with Newark Police Director, Anthony Ambrose too... He grew up just over the line in (dare I say) St Francis' parish.

How about one class at St Rose with so many parents on the NPD. Our class of '68 may have had the most parents: Mr. Davis, Mr. Scott, Mr. Cullinane, Mr. Marion, and Mr AND Mrs. Castle... who did I forget?

EDDIE HUMM

February 22 2005, 2:43 AM

Your right Sara Eddie was a Newark Police Officer serving for 25 years in the South District. Also Eddie and I served in the Marines during Vietnam. Funny story I was in Vietnam out at the 3/1 Bn. area and one night a couple of us guys were sitting around talking and asking where we were from. I said Newark, NJ. Now you got to remember it's dark,no lights. I guy says, hey there's a guy in our company who's from Newark. He said I'll get him. A few minutes they come back and a voice says who's from Newark. I call out "I'm from Newark. Where? Roseville. He says me too. He asks what's your name. I give my name and he start's laughing. Now on a side note there was a very heroic Marine with that name, and I think he thinks I'm putting him on. Then he says Dan! Eddie Humm. A lighter is used and we shake hands. Next day we catch up on old times. Also you know Eddie was pretty heroic also. He was awarded a Purple Heart during the street fighting in Santo Domingo, D.R. in 1965. I was always proud to know Eddie Humm both as a Marine and as a Cop's Cop.

That is a very handsome jacket indeed. I think it's coming back into style. Looks great!

My brother, Jerry Brown, was on the Irvington PD for a little while and then moved to the Essex County Police. He spent alot of time in Branch Brook I think.

That Leather Jacket

February 22 2005, 11:37 PM

Joan Lynn, you'd be welcome to it, but I no longer own it. I gave it to a guy who helped me move a bunch of furniture, and wouldn't take any money. So now the jacket rides a Harley.
The picture was taken around 1981.

We Rode the West Together

February 27 2005, 2:00 PM

Funny Bob I worked with Danny Helber for about a year in Unit 416 in the West District and I never knew he was from St. Roses. I know he had two favorite hangouts. The Town Tap on 18th. Avenue and The Hall Tavern on So. Orange Avenue, which used to be the Village Squire. I don't know if you know, but after Danny passed away the guy who owned the Hall put up a memorial to Danny with his picture and a small writing about him. Now that the tavern is gone I wonder where the memorial is?

It takes a village....

March 1 2005, 12:37 PM

...or in this case Roseville. Thank you Bobby Davis for your highly exaggerated words. It'a an honor to be mentioned along with those people and a gift to be remembered at all. After my 'retirement book' comes out.... the truth will be revealed. I am convinced that 'our Newark' played a creditable role in our development. We learned how to survive in stable, secure surroundings during the turbulent era of the 60's. The teachers / coaches / parents / volunteers were significant others in our lives and probably made a difference in the manner we live today.
You continue to have an influence. Example if I may. The CD of St.Lucy's Cadets (1960 - 1969) you sent me recently. After listening to it for my 1 1/2 hour, bumper-bumper commute home I'll come 'marching and humming' into the house. My daughter will scream..."Oh no he's been listening to that marching stuff again"... believing that soon I'll be asking her, "did I ever tell you about the time....".
It's still hard to believe how John Crowley has brought us all home again with this web-site. So many people and stories that were thought to be long gone. God Bless Johnn Crowley and 'his Bodholt's'.
