How many of you remember these two bars on South Orange Ave? Jimmy's Roscommon House was between 10th and 11th Streets, and Lydon's was on the corner of 12th Street. Lydon's used to have the John Lydon Association and marched in the St. Patricks Day Parade every year till sometime around 1960 or so.
The Roscommon House made the largest and best sandwiches I've ever had. They also had huge shrimps.
Don't recall Lydon's, but I do remember the Roscommon House on So. Orange Ave, around 9th or 10th St. During the early 80's I worked out of the West District Police Station at 17th Ave & Livingston St. The precinct was a block from Belmont Ave, the name of which has since been changed to some Central Ward huckster. Anyway, you're right on about the sandwiches and shrimp. The draft beer wasn't bad, either.
Hello Marty. Love your comment about the name of Belmont Ave now being named for a "Central Ward Huckster." LOVE IT. Same think can be said about High Street. I still refuse to call them anything except their original names - High Street and Belmont Ave.
Hi Jule. I used to go there for lunch when i worked in Newark. Thay also had a cheddar cheese plate with a
cocktail sauce and the best sandwichs in town. Thanks for the memory.
I know he went to Kearny and opened up a new place I believe on Midland Ave.
I spent many a night in the Roscommon and rememberwhen you used to get six huge shrimp for $.60, yes you see that right, sixty cents for six shrimp. His sauce was out of this world. Cleaned out your sinuses.
