Wow, Dickie Dee's looks exactly the same. Do they still have the autographed pictures of the '72 Miami Dolphins undefeated team? I think Dickie Dee had a connection with Don Shula--Shula's autographed pictures with personal messages were all over the place years ago.
I do have to admit that the potatoes at Dickie Dees look better in these pictures... cubed beats sliced any day! But where was the mustard!?!
John,
Excellent and fair report on the hot dog contest. When Don returns home tomorrow, I will make sure he sees it.
Have you seen the review of Jersey Joe's hot dogs in the "Savor" section of today's Star-Ledger? In the article she mentions Jimmy Buffs but says that Dickie Dee's in Newark is "long gone". Maybe the lady needs to be corrected.
John, I read your report and viewed the photos you submitted. If you look at my report on Buff's in East Hanover you will see that I said the potatoes were made wrong. Also the bread in not the right type for a Newark Italian Hot Dog. I think the judges were bias, because acoording to your report Dickie Dees should have won. I'm sorry I couldn't make the contest, but I know that Dickie Dees is number one, always was and always will be. On a side note since you live in the neighborhood whats going on at the Coke Factory site. I see they demolished it.
Dan, thanks for your confirmation that DD's is the premier dog house. I think the mistake I made in organizing the contest was going to JB's first. By the time we got to DD's I was not hungry anymore and perhaps others were a bit full as well, possibly dimming the enjoyment of the DD dog. I don't know. Nixon got elected twice.
Re the old Coke site, it's just a vacant lot now. I heard Jimmy Buff bought the site for a theme park.
Maybe the next First Friday should be held at Dickie Dee's and then the following month at Jimmy Buff's. More people, more opinions. Of course, you'll have to go without the spirits.
Well done. I am an old time Dickie Dee fan myself from when the store was located down Bloomfield Avenue closer to Mt. Prospect Avenue near the Seacrest Restuarant.
Benny Abruzzo's "coach" Mr. Voller introduced us to both places around 1963 or 64..
Great job John and company. It was a bonus to see the water tower in the background of DD's. I often think of those dogs out here on the west coast. Try explaining "Pizza Bread" to those in the land of sprouts and avacados. It's worse than describing White Castle hamburgers.
hey there art it was nice seeing you on the board, i don't know if you remember me, but i remember you. we were in the most coolest class of the whole school not even the eight graders were as cool as as our class, remember we went thru like 4 teachers within that school year 71 when we were in the 7th grade, we had mr. zaparannick
i don't know if you remember when we got slapped in the face by archbishop boland for our confirmation and the time carmine, albert, and myself put dumbtacks on the girls chairs hahahahaha
i just can't remember what the nuns name was for the other 7th graders, all in all we were tops :)
I do remember you. The other grade was Sister Eleanor I think. She was really out there as I recall. Did you end up leaving before 8th grade?? It's good to see a contemporary on the site as most of the others went to school with my sister Linda or Diane. I'm not one to post often, but I check the site daily. It's a hoot and brings back great memories. (Italian Hot Dogs for instance. Nice to hear from you.
your right thats her name sister elenor, she was some nun, remember she use to try to get us to behave hahahaha and we would make these heckling sounds hahaha and david vargas got in trouble for it. and yes by 8th grade and went to sussex ave school.
You moved on by 8th grade and missed the only "looker" we ever had as a teacher. Miss Saman I think it was. The guys would dream about her. I still have our 8th grade photo of our trip to Washington DC. She had that cool 70's Perm/Afro. I went to High School with Carmine but lost touch. He had an interesting few years after high school. We mved to Nutley in '80.
ohhhhhhh yesss!!! i remember her, she had all of us going crazy hahaha. wow wash. d.c. i could only imagine, the fun you guys must of had and remember the old man the gym teacher he use to go around and smacking us hard in our stomachs (sp) saying that would make it hard lol what a freak he musta of been lol
I would love to make a First Friday at Cryans one of these days. I don't make it to the East Coast much with the exception of New York. I'll try to time one of these trips at some point. Keep writing as we need to let thses folks know what happened to the neighborhood once they all moved to the berbs.
Art you would just enjoy yourself at First Fridays. I just wish more people from the "Class of 72" would show up. Also it's not offcial yet but rumours have it that there's a "calander" being published and so far they have Mr. January, Mr. April and I think Mr. August whatever month the greek olympics took place this guy has been working out and for his age he's looking like the Gov. of Cali. and a few Mrs. but the lid is tightly sealed on that one!
