Did you notice the Newark Bears opened the season Wednesday in front of a crowd of over 6200 fans? They are now three and o and open up a six game homestand Tuesday night. All are night games save for a 12 noon game Wednesday and a Sunday afternoon game..

Original Bears

When did the original Newark Bears go out of business? I don't remember them in the fifties. I read in a history of minor leagues that the Newark Bears in the thirties were considered the best minor league team ever!!

When Babe Ruth retired he wanted to manager real bad. The Yankees thought that he wasn't Manager material but they offered him the opportunity to manage the Newark Bears but he refused. Shame on him!!

1950

1950 was the final season of the old Newark Bears. Rupert Stadium was demolished in 1967. I remember seeing my friend Tony Hammed pitch there for Barringer against Vailsburg in 1964. I also saw my friend Frank Manochio play quarterback in that stadium for Barringer against South Side High in 1965..

I travel on route 280 past the stadium to and from work everyday. Funny that they keep the lights on every evening, game or no game.
