That would be the corner of Orange and 7th Streets; the Plaza
theater would be to the right; there used to be a dentist's office on the second floor of the brick building on the right side of the picture, but it's just out of sight.
If you look down the street you see that church steeple? That used to be Roseville Methodist Church where I started attending in the fall of 1955 with guys named Don Pearson, Bob Biglin, Bob Bonnet, Ed Whinn; and girls named Milli Wingen, Shirley and Marge Scott, Beryl Hunter (all from EO)to name a few.
Bodholts was our favorite hangout after church and after MYF meetings on Sunday nights.
I lived at 301 6th Avenue, between No 9th St and Roseville Ave. It was burned out some years back, and the last time I was up there (June 03) it was a parking lot for trucks with a razor wire fence around it!
I went to Barringer HS starting in 1952 and graduated Jan 1957.
I'm retired now (age 66) and living in Central Jersey--near Vincentown, Burlington County.
Remember the White Castle at the corner of Roseville and 7th Ave? Hamburgers were .14 cents then.
Checking out the site some more; I'll be back from time to time.
I believe we are looking at the intersection of Orange St. and Roseville Ave. The left hand corner would later be occupied by the Wonder Bar (where I probably spent too many nights playing pool during my years at Seton Hall). Also I believe the cheap hamburger place at Roseville and 7th Ave. was the White Circle.
Hi Bob. No, sorry to say I don't recognize name. As a
teenager back then I wasn't interested in knowing too
many of the adults; too busy hanging out with kids in the
MYF group. I attended there Sept 1955 through Sept 1963.
Hung out with Don Pearson, Bob Bonnet, Wayne Clifton,
Bob Biglin, but mostly with Don Pearson who became my
wife's brother-in-law.
Bob, I checked the 100th Anniversary booklet
of Roseville Methodist (1955)and her name is
not listed as a member. I asked around, but
no one can remember her.....
Could be Orange Streeet and Roseville Avenue -- or Orange and 7th Street. I would say it is the same scene, skewed a tad, as the recent Berg photo you used, but the distance to the church steeple seems a little long -- so either one or the other. How's that for making a decision. :-)
I looked again and it is definitely Orange and 7th. The same buildings we see in the 1960 era photo are there in this one, which I would guess dates from around 1910 or so.
Yes, John Deehan was my first cousin. He was also my first accounting professor in my Freshman year at Seton Hall. John unfortunately passed away last year at age 76. He had a long and distinguished career at Seton Hall serving as Chairman of the Accounting Department for 27 years.
Thanks for the response. He was a nice man. I know Paul and Ed as we were at Seton Hall Prep at the same time and on the wrestling team. My regards to the family.
Does anyone remember when Brohman's Clothing store was at the intersection of Orange Street and 7 Th. St. I believe it was the late 50's or early 60's when a horse, coming down 7 th.st.,went right through Brohman's window.
Do you remember around 1959 -1960 when the police found a dead body in a car parked on 7Th. St.just up from Orange St. when the deli was on the corner?
Dear SkiP! Hi. .very happy to have found your site....I attended the roseville Methodist church from birth (1951) (and Baptism (same Year)...untill I was 18 years old. I remember the bonnets.
