My "best" buddy throughout my years at St. Rose was Bethann Donahue. She's been gone for awhile now, but I have great memories of all our fun times. We became inseperable from our first day of Kindergarten, a friendship that lasted way past High School. Frequently all we had was each other and our abilities to somehow find humor during many humorless times. My point is this, Budholt's Diner has allowed all those heartwarming memories to stay fresh, and dig up many new ones perhaps stowed away over the years. Does anyone else remember any good old pals who long ago helped you through the good times and bad?
This website certainly has done all of that. Here's another example:
I hadn't seen Beth Ann since our SRL 8th grade graduation night and one night I went to the "Jetty" restaurant on Bloomfield Ave at the Parkway. My sister, who worked there, surprised me and asked if I knew who the other waitress was... Yep, Beth Ann. I was with a bunch of SRL guys and we had a blast with Beth Ann and SRL trivia. Of course we had to go back a few more times after that. My sister lost contact with Beth Ann when she moved down South.
What a horrible story about what happened to Beth Ann. May she rest in peace.
But I agree... this website and all the events that it's spurred have been a blast! Thanks to JC and everybody else who have made this experience so rewarding.
Thank you Bob! I have been trying to think of the name of that place for the last two or three years. I used to teach at Franklin School in Bloomfield and about 30 years ago a parent named Mr. Kopacz bought The Gays 90's and changed the name to King Henry's and then expanded the restaurant changing the name again to The Jetty. After one PTA meeting he picked up the tab for the entire staff. Sorry to see it closed. Without this website, I would have been racking my brain (what is left of it) for years to come trying to remember the name. Thank you.
I grew up with Peter Winklbauer, Artie Fonden, and
John Crowley. Ever since grammer school we hung together,
thru the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Still in touch with them.
Great friendships were started then.
Hey, Dennis. People used to cross the street when they saw the four of us coming! We were the terror of Orange Street. Not all of our adventures can be shared on a family website, but they came close to outweighing our charitable work.
I started kindergarten at St Rose in the fall of 1958 and graduated in 1967. From that time in 1958 until now, some 47 years,I am proud to say that James Bellina, John Lawrence and I still talk or get together.
Hi Everyone,
Patti, you bring up a great point. My two best friends growing up at SRL were the now reclusive Steven Scott and the legendary Bobby Jones. Like the rest of us we drifted after I moved down the Shore, but since the first reunion in '93, Bobby & I have become close again, and I couldn't be happier. We're still trying to get Steven to join the fray. Also, being close to you, Bob D., Linda and Patrick again is just as wonderful.
Vinnie
P.S. I have a picture that Bobby Jones sent me of Himself, Steven & myself circa 1969. JC, if you read this, can I e-mail it to you to post?
Oh man, those were the days. No matter how many years pass I hope I never forget the good times on North 11th Street! Let's all search in our personal archives for more photos.

Thanks for cleaning up the picture, John, it looks great. And by the way, wasn't it nice to have hair?
Hi Howard,
Marla is a cousin of my Father, Joe Falcetano. They hadn't been in contact with each other since we moved down the shore in 1969, but they saw each other shortly before he died in 2002. Nice lady.
YIKES
That's me on the right, Vinny Falcetano in the Middle, Steven Scott on the left.
The picture was taken downtown at the YMCA as we were leaving to go back to "work camp". No, not a penitentiary, the "Y" used to bring city kids to Kamp Kiamesha near Branchburg as workers slash campers. Mike Dessoye and Andrew Scott were also part of the chain gang.
The camp had a rifle range and when we came home for this weekend, we talked our parents into letting us take our own rifles back to camp. We had acquired a .22 for protection during the "disturbances" of 67.
I still remember that the reason we're holding fishing poles in this picture is because we started out to get a picture with us holding the .22's and one of the counselors made us put the rifles back in their cases. 1969 was not a good year to be holding rifles in downtown Newark.
These pictures are GREAT!!! The one from Vinnie brings back alot of good memories. Chris J, Paula Freda, and myself went to the Y in the summer also. Everyone still looks the same except for the last picture. Is that anyone I know????? lol
In 1969 I was not too long out of the army, still jumpy and kept my .45 automatic in a dresser drawer (still do). It was the last year I lived in Roseville. Got married and took off "down the shore" in 1970. :-)
I could not beleive when I came upon this website, my younger sister susan told me to check it out. My sisters and I grew up first on sixth street and and then on myrtle avenue, I graduated fron SRl in 1966, Sr regina Rose's class. We moved to Nutley after I graduated so my sister's were escapee's,what great memories we have of growing up in Newark, those were good times. We lived next door to the Winkbarell family on Myrtle avenue. I fact I broke my leg on his skate board in 8th grade I missed the second half of 8th grade, I had to have a tutor. but I was able to graduate with my class. My best friend was Debbie Dorso, she moved to Nutley sophmore year of High School.
