We've seen this photo before, but it's one of my favorites so I'm putting it in heavy rotation, so to speak. It's from the NPL's Berg Collection, of course, and shows us what was playing at our beloved Tivoli one July day in 1961. And Skip will like that view of the Roseville Methodist Church, one of the "twin towers" that graced the top of Orange Street.

I REMEBER

July 11 2005, 6:16 PM

John,

I remember going there in '66 to watch that Tony Randall matinee movie "The Brass Bottle". Someone threw a broomstick and yelled Viking when the harem girls appeared in the movie.
Those were the days. Call me 201-774-8451.

I am shocked I say!

I believe that both the movies in the picture plus the one Rosario saw were on the "Condemned" list in the church.
Come to think of it- pretty much everything but Disney ended up on the Board of 'Objectionable Movies' that would warp our minds.
Little did they imagine what was coming down the pike- both on the big and little screens.!

Shocked! :-)

What always puzzled me was what to do about the movies listed as "morally objectionable in part." Did that mean you could go and see them as long as you could figure out the "part" and put your hands over your eyes? :-)

SHOCKED?

Laura,

I thought The Brass Bottle was a family movie. I don't recall seeing it on the condemned list.

Morally Objectional?

July 14 2005, 7:13 PM

You are right- I seem to recall SrReginaRose telling us about beach movies and bikinis bringing on impure thoughts etc. Remember- thinking about sinning was almost as bad as doing the deed and to avoid the Tivoli altogether!
My first 'condemned' movie was "I am Curious Yellow" in about 1967/68ish?? I can still remember
being all mental and busing it up to the Art Theater on Springfield Avenue in Irvington hunkering down in the seat-thinking I would be struck by lightning- Well the movie had sub-titles and my lasting overwhelming memory is that the movie Stunk!
I guess the Church no longer rates movies any more- stuff that was 'Condemned' thirty years ago is on prime-time TV.

Remember This One......

July 15 2005, 3:25 PM

I can rember the very first day "Mash" played at
the Tivoli. The movie poster out front displayed
an army helmut with a pair of women's legs sticking
out. Sister Rita Damien condemmed the move as "the
most disgusting thing imaginable". I'd like to hear
what she has to say about our hollywood productions today.
