Was thinking the other day how many characters lived in Roseville. They ran the gamut, of course, from angelic to demonic. In the former category, I would have to nominate Carl Hopp, who ran his family's drug store at 4th and Orange. Never met a more patient, compassionate man in my life. When we walked in he would always address us as "Father Crowley," "Father Stawarski," "Father Kildunne," etc. Stayed in Roseville even after 280 took his store -- he just moved across the street. Even after he was shot in a robbery, he came to work every day. He was one of a kind.
John,
My Family knew Carl Hopp very well as his original store was less than 1/2 block from my home on 4th street.I constantly went back to visit him through the 70's
Your bringing up his name stirred my memory of others in my childhood. the Nason brothers they had the butcher shop on orange st. between 4th & 5th St.Next to them was Art's cleaners run by him and his wife. Do you remember Rogel's Grocery store on the corner of 3rd and Orange St.(lots of penny candy there). Oh and across the street from Rogel's was Bubble's convient store.Of course who could forget Braun's German Bakery between 5th and 6th on Orange St. I can still smell the fresh baked bread.I guess what really made these places special were the people who ran them and their Personalities.they are as vivid in my mind today as if I had just been in their stores yesterday.I do agree with you Carl is the most memorable.
Peter
I remember Carl Hopp, we always went to Hopp's for our prescriptions, etc. growing up. This would have been in the 70's when the area had already changed, but they stayed on. I also remember Rogel's, husband and wife. I'd go there with my uncle for candy. He died during a robbery or something, didn't he? I also remember Tilmis'....that distinct smell the store had and the little bell that rang when you entered. The woman (don't remember her name) would immediately come over, asking if you needed help. Orange Street had definitely changed by the time I was growing up, but I still have fond memories. We went to SRL for church, Msgr. Linder was there or had just recently come...I also remember Fr. Raught...and a couple of others that I think were fairly new at the time...Fr. Ivory and Fr. Testa I think. They didn't stay too long though.
