Right, Bathgate Place, just past the DL&W tracks and 7th Avenue. The little brick storefront to the left used to belong to the Ruane family in the 1950s. I believe they lived in the attached house. The back of the Roseville Avenue Armory was across the street.

I walked past that store every day on my way to St Rose's. I remember there being a store in there that sold Chinese items. Does anyone know if it is still there?

I often send copies of the pictures John posts to my friend the architectural historian, who was born, raised and lives in the midwest, and has no experience of large eastern cities. Her assessment on the last picture of the row of houses was that they were originally built between 1890 and 1910 or so. This is her take on the age of the houses in this picture:

"Joe, these are earlier than what you sent before. Note the small windows. Technology was such that large paned glass wasn't possible until the late 1800s/early 1900s, so small window frames are a tipoff. There have obviously been many changes to these houses over the years. I would say the windows on the one on the right may have been originally the old "6 over 6" panes and could have been from the Civil War era. The bay window was added later, as was the (enclosed) front porch room. Are these brick or imitation (asbestos) brick?
The one on the left has been added to extensively over the years. Obviously added: the mansard roof (1880s ?) The REAL mansard roofed houses had large windows. And that front addition (1930s-60s?)!
I love the '57 Chevy in the driveway.
It always shocks me- girl raised in the wide open fly-over states- how close together people in the city live(d). Dang!"

I rem the building with the brick front men would play cards in side. Smoke cigars mostly sitting on the side of the front steps. The store around 62+ was run by Richard. He wore clothes similar to Charles Dickens. Richard was around 18-20 at the time. He was good friends with Bowlers.

Correct all around. This is a Berg Collection photo from 1961. By way of contrast, below is a photo taken today from the same spot:

Hey John, today they have a satelite dish. In our day we went down the corner to the pizza place to watch color TV thru the window.
