What was YOUR favorite candy?

Good thing my diet doesn't start until Monday.......we're just back from a vacation where I found the replacement to my favorite candy when I was a kid...Bonomo's Turkish Taffy. I'd heard of this new brand for some time and came across it on a shelf during the week. 'French Chew' tastes EXACTLY the way I remember Turkish taffy.

I also liked Mallo-Mars, licorice sticks, Hostess chocolate cupcakes with the squiggle on top, and an R.C. Cola. (Yes, I still have all my own teeth and in great shape!!!)

Good thing that diet doesn't start until Monday

Mumm Candy!

July 15 2006, 12:26 PM

I remember a brand of little boxed candies - "Heide"? They had two things I loved- Chocolate Babies and Candy Corn (nowdays candy corn is too sweet and a Halloween item)-
Also - nothing beat a frozen Milky Way bar from the Plaza Movies for a nickel!
Oh for the days of nickel and dime candy! Nothing tasted better and I think there was nothing I wouldn't eat except for Mounds bars (no coconut for me)

Laurie, I had forgotten about Chocolate Babies!

Found an interesting page showing a salesman's candy products from 1949. Very interesting! Click on an item to check it out.

That was some nasty stuff -- kept Dr. Mulvaney in business hollowing out my teeth without novacaine. :-)

I liked the Turkish taffy, when frozen and smashed against a wall so that it shattered. In the penny candy line, my favorite was malted milk balls -- got 'em by the handfull in Josie's.

When I was in 7th or 8th grade, some joker, Bobby Lyons I think, brought chocolate covered insects to school. He suckered some people, but not me. :-)

You have some bag o' Tricks!

Where did you ever get those photos! They are great!and what memories- after seeing the pix- I remembered seeing those ads for Heide candies in glorious black and white on TV as I watched Sgt Preston of the Yukon!
I swear those old candies were the best! I think they were more naturally made with no chemicals like today- since they were packaged in little cardboard boxes and were frequently stale- I would say that is a fair guess.

Ah Yes, besides all of the above, I found some of my favorites on that website too, like "walnettos", "double bubble gum", and "Mason Mints." I went to Dr. Strollo DDS on West Mkt Street. He had a liitle treasure chest full of toy prizes the kids could pick from. I think I got most of them.

I was partial to the frozen Snicker's Mr. Ratner kept with the popcycle stick. Cost seven cents. I almost broke a finger trying to shatter a Turkish Taffy. No one told me it was supposed to be COLD. I was five years old for goodness sake!
I still like Mary Janes, but my teeth... umm, my fillings don't.
