Although when I first remember this giant of a man (to my first grade self!) he was wearing a more old-fashioned uniform. It was fitted more closely and with what I remember as a slightly flared waist. But he was always kind and smiling. Thanks for sharing, Marge.
I had the priviledge to know Marty Donnelly fairly well, since he lived his later years in the McEvoy Apts, when we still lived across the street. He'd spend his afternoons on the stoop in front of Cole's Funeral Home (which might have changed hands by then). There'd be a few other old gents, among them another old-time cop named Joe Schimpf, grandfather of Bobby Schimpf (SRL'67).
The uniform you remember is probably the winter coat, a big woolen, double-breated thing with brass buttons and a collar that could be buttoned up to the neck. I still have mine.
The job in front of SRL on Sunday was probably overtime, in addition to his regular duties at Orange & Roseville.
It wasn't until the late 1990's that we got a teletype informing us of his passing, so he must have reached a ripe old age.
May he Rest in Peace.
Wow! He must have really made an impression on me, because after staring at his face for a minute, I thought "Marty the cop in front of St Rose's". But I left St Rose's in 4th grade! I guess he was really kind to the little kids..
I remember him as a nice man but if you rode your two wheeler on the sidewalk in front of the church, He had a short piece of I think plastic cord that as he cracked it and stung you with it he would say "No riding here on the sidewalk."
John, You are amazing . Thank's for the picture.
I think everyone, who lived in Roseville during that time period, knew who 'Marty The Cop' was. My memory tells me he went from his post on Orange and Gray Sts. to Orange St. and Roseville Ave. Does anyone else know about this change of post?
I've just received a note from Margaret Donnelly D'Elia that i want to pass along:
"His name was Martin Donnelly and he lived on Sixth St. between 6th and 7th Ave. Never lived in the MacAvoy Court. Sometime in 1960 he was transferred from Orange and Gray to Roseville and Orange, I don't know why, but he was transferred back on April 11, 1960 at the request of Rev. Leach of the Methodist Church on Orange and Bathgate Pl. He also won the Kresge Dept. Store "Most Popular Cop in Newark" contest in September 1954. He was 92 when he died in June 1995. The "piece of plastic" was actually a leather shoe lace he hung his ivory whistle from. Thank you all for remembering him."
Thanks for your note, Margaret.

I remember Marty. Does anyone remember Napp or Knapp the cop. He used was a motorcycle cop and used to come into Dairyland when I was working and rap me on the head with his lead filled gloves.
Ouch.
I remember a motorcycle cop they called Nappy. Never knew his real name, but I think he was an uncle of Delores Huber from 9th St.
As to Martin Donnely, I always thought he lived at the McEvoy Apts, since he "hung out" with the older gents across the street. They taught us in the Police Academy,"when you ASSUME, you make an ASS out of U and ME". There you go.
