I believe they were called Flapper hats, or more technically, "cloche" hats from the french word for "bell".
I've seen those styles from the old silent films of the 20's and they remained in style until the depression ended.
John, your selection of these photos is superb. I, for one, appreciate and thank you for your dedication and time consuming research to get this kind of memorabilia here. Withou a doubt, you have a truly special talent which enables you to do this work, and you demonstrate an endless passion to remind people that the City of Newark was a vibrant and thriving metropolis and pretty much a marvelous place to live.
I worked at Bam's and Kresge's. Kresge's was in the process of changing over to " Chase's Dept. Store ". When I was going to college, I worked for Chase's in Men's Furnishings, M-W-F, 5:30- 9:30PM and all day Sat. $21.50 on payday.
I worked at Kresges in the fur department two floors below the subway really. Then in the handbag an wallet dept. this was after school and summers in my JR & SR year at Benedicts.
I worked at Bushberg Brothers on Market Street in the 70's.
They were a family business, but were there (and still going strong) after many many years. Two brothers, Harry and Gilbert Bushberg opened it in 1947.
I really got a kick out of Gil. He was a really classy guy. Always dressed well. Always interesting to talk to.
