From the NPL comes this shot of Market Street. It is October 1930, and despite the Depression, there seems to be a lot of shoppers about.

Hats

January 21 2007, 6:55 PM

Some of the ladies' hats look similar to the style Buster Crabbe wore, as Flash Gordon, when he fought the Emperor Ming.

Those great hats

January 22 2007, 4:02 AM

I believe they were called Flapper hats, or more technically, "cloche" hats from the french word for "bell".
I've seen those styles from the old silent films of the 20's and they remained in style until the depression ended.

I love the derby the guy has on. I wish I knew where to buy one. I think they are cool.

John, your selection of these photos is superb. I, for one, appreciate and thank you for your dedication and time consuming research to get this kind of memorabilia here. Withou a doubt, you have a truly special talent which enables you to do this work, and you demonstrate an endless passion to remind people that the City of Newark was a vibrant and thriving metropolis and pretty much a marvelous place to live.

for Joe. You want a Derby?

January 22 2007, 10:20 AM

Here's about 75 of them.

Go to e-bay.com
Type mens derby in the search line

You'll see lots of choices.

Ohrbach's sign

January 22 2007, 11:15 AM

I fondly remember working there the summer and early fall of 1964.
Low pay, but a nice work environment. Women's shoes.

Did anyone else work at one of the downtown big five deparment stores:
Bambergers, Kresges, Ohrbachs, Hahnes or Kleins?

who worked where

January 23 2007, 6:19 PM

I worked at Bushberg Brothers on Market Street in the 70's.
They were a family business, but were there (and still going strong) after many many years. Two brothers, Harry and Gilbert Bushberg opened it in 1947.

I really got a kick out of Gil. He was a really classy guy. Always dressed well. Always interesting to talk to.
