From the NPL's Photo Collection comes this 1950 shot of Mayor Ralph Villani cutting the cheese. A 600-pound provolone, that is. The eight-foot behemoth was displayed at Michael Galeotafiore's grocery store at 223 8th Avenue.
Good eye, Bob. Didn't anybody else pick up on this reference? I guess somebody would've commented if they did.
Does the picture of the provolone (especially at this angle) remind anyone of an historical event from the 1st half of the 20th century? Hint: it happened in New Jersey.
