From 1910 comes this postcard found by Doris Flatley showing the newly renamed Barringer High School (formerly Newark High). It would last only another 50 years before being replaced by a newer building. I'll always fondly remember my alma mater!
Do you think that there may be photos of the construction from 1910 in the NPL archives? You're pretty good at researching that kind of historic memorabilia.
in 1878 Dr. William N. Barringer Supertendent of Schools oversaw construction of a high school building at the cost of 300,000 dollars construction was completed in 1899 [21 years] ---in 1907 the name of Newark High School was officially changed to BARRINGER ----Newark High School opened in 1838 in at building on Bank St. In 1852 the Board of Ed. built a new building on Washington and Linden Sts, on Jan. 7, 1853 the new building was open 3 stories high 498 boys and girls In 1875 Dr. William N. Barringer was hired as superintendent of schools. The class of 1898 was the last to graduate from Newark High School on Washington and Linden The new school was built on a tract of swamp land far from the center of the city. work also had begun on the swamp land to transform it in to a park and stonemarkers outlined the ground plan for Sacred Heart Cathedral. Barringer was built on a old quarry called "goat hill". The new school opened in 1964 a great year for the city of Newark. the school lasted 65 years before moving to the park. Barringer is older than Branch Brook Park formely known as old blue jay swamp and Sacred Heart Cathedral
