Well, everybody knows this block. This July 1961 photo comes from the NPL's Berg Collection, a treasure trove of Newark neighborhood images. I can still smell the pickle barrel inside the deli doorway.
The best Pastrami and Rye. Fresh Sweet Buns and Bagels and Fresh Warm Italian Bread. Art, Teddy and Gus and his sister Helen were the backbone it was a family business. I remember the Boller Soda Contest for the Bicycle Prize that hung from the ceiling and that every kid in the neighborhood was praying to win that bike. I forget but possibly the winning Bottle Cap was the determining factor.
George & Stan Chrysohos, Ron Sudol lived above the Deli in the North Seventh Street Apartment house as did Joe Lebert.
Neighbors; Dick & Bob Evans, Paul Durkin, Joe Barry, Don Pearson,Gardner Frost, Joe Corby, Joe Barbier, Maryann McConnell, Eugene,Ralph & Buddy McBride, Harriet Sachs,Barbara Gervaris.
In the picture that looks alot like Larry O'Krogly crossing the street. He Lived near 4th Street.
Joe & Carol Lebert was their Cousin and Joe's Grandmother was the Superintendent I believe. Mrs Coleman.
Last I saw Joe Lebert was in Ridgefield, NJ approx 15 years ago.
One of my best friends from kindergarten to Seton Hall University was Robert Coleman. He and his brother, sister, mother and father lived on the second floor of that apartment. We have a lot of years and memories in that building and the courtyard behind, where you could walk, climb and tunnel from 7th Street to Roseville Aveue. Made for great "Hide & Seek" games. We lost touch with each other in college. Does anybody know what happened and where are the Coleman's?
GREAT PHOTO JOHNNY..... I REMEMBER THE DELI WELL. MY DAD
(GOD REST HIS SOUL) AND I WOULD GO THERE EVERY WEEKEND TO BRING HOME THEIR PASTRAMI.....GRUNNINGS TOO....THOSE WERE THE DAYS..
I used to dance at the live shows at the Plaza Theatre on Saturdays sometimes! I still remember the 2 ladies who owned it and would shut off the movie until the kids quieted down. I think I have pictures and programs! Gotta find them!
