Joe Bilby sends in this undated photo from the NJ Archives, National Guard collection. That's the Essex Troop (102nd Cavalry) from the Roseville armory marching past the Roseville Methodist Church, doubtless taken from the steps of St. Rose.

And because we all love to learn, he attaches this brief note on the church. Thanks, Joe.

Newark's Roseville Methodist Episcopal Church was built in 1889. The large triple-arched entrance and rusticated stone are typical of the Romanesque Revival. The elongated, heavily decorated windows high on the tower are occasionally seen on other churches of the period, but not any like these. The adjoining structures are obviously part of the "church," but they are very secular in appearance. When it was built it was much the largest structure in the neighborhood, and still stands out because of its tower and white stone construction. It is now known as the First Hopewell Baptist church, located at 525 Orange Street in Newark.

Bonus photo!

Roseville Methodist Church

Looking at this picture was what I looked at EVERY DAY. I lived at 526 Orange St., right above Katz' cleaner, which was right next door to H&B grocery store. I'm sure quite a few alumni from SRL drove the bike that was parked in front, to deliver groceries around the neighborhood.
Anyway, that Church was directly across from our apt., and on Sunday, it was quite a sight to see all the congregants coming and going to the Sunday services.Beautiful view, for sure.

Oh My God!! Do I ever!!!! We had to lug those big things on the No.22 bus ,and then coming back, we had to walk a mile(or at least it seemed like a mile) to catch the bus going home!Great hearing from you patty. Do you remember when your dog bit me when I was coming into your apt.?I always thought he was such a cute little dog, until then. Do you still have your accordion? I finally got rid of mine when I was probably 35 yrs. old!!!Say hi to "Pammy" for me , will you?

I worked at H&B in 1956 and drove that huge bike to deliver many orders around the neighborhood.
