Hey guys! I went to the feast on sunday with my cousins! My daughter and her boyfriend came with me for the first time and were so impressed. Just like it was when I was a little girl. I grew up there before they took the homes down! Did some dancing to the Italian band-ate zeppoles and sausage sandwiches! Very nostalgic for me. Was hoping to see some of you there. Especially you JC. Your always involved with things like this! Where were you????
We went down Saturday night and we did see Pete Leone and his wife Carol Casale. Of course, there are always people from the neighborhood. Mike did get upset when I ordered a cheesesteak and not a sausage sandwich. I love going down there, it always reminds me of when I was a kid with my parents and my father would not leave until he heard the opera singer.
I know a lot of people who want to go. Can we assume that it is sometime in mid October? I guess San Gennaro in Little Italy, New York is going on now.
We went in 1986, Benny Abruzzo, Ray iannuzzi and his brother, Donald Belfiore, Mike Torluccio, Charlie Hand and myself rented a limo. We had box seats for the Red Sox-Yankee game and then went down to Little Italy. Memorable night, 22 years ago. Got home at dawn. Anyway, does anyone know anything about the feat at St. Lucy's?
I see I missed San Gennaro in New York, (September 11-21). let's set a date and go to St. Gerards down at St. Lucy's. There are still busloads of people who come from all over the East Coast. I wonder if Msgr. Granato is still the pastor? Father Nativo passed away awhile back. Two great men. The Essex County Sheriff's Department did a great job with security and it is extrmely safe.
Frank, Ro, I'm in! Saturday afternoon or evening is good for me. Sunday I'll be going to the Hawthorne Cabs Alumni practice in Hawthorne. Frank, No news on any St. Lucy's 40th. Will check into it. Bob
Bobby, Saturday is perfect for me! Get in touch with me so we can meet. Have to find out what time he comes out. Would like to follow him alittle, and I could meet you. Yes, still Italian and follow the saint! Frank, you in??
I think everyone will try and make it if they can. But go ahead and set the time and date. My wife usually goes when her friends , the two Joannes of Second Street and their cousin can make it. I won't know until the last minute. so, set the time and date.
The city of Newark paid for a plaque to place on the old West Precinct to commemorate the 40th anniversary of The Newark riots, which were acts of lawlessness, anarchy, larceny, arson, and murder. They should be commemorating the anniverary of the wonderful achievement of the St. Lucy's Cadets, who brought glory and fame to the city. Who can ever forget the picture of Jim Russo on the front page of the NY Daily News. "Too much um pa pa. " Does anyone still have it? There needs to be a plaque on the grounds of St. Lucy's church for future generations to see and learn about a group of talented young people from 1968.
Frank, I go to a place called Shaves in Spring Lake for a haircut and shave every four weeks or so. It's an upscale place with mohagany furniture and woodwork but they are an old fashioned barbershop with the big ceramic and leather chairs with the headrest and footrest. The shaves are done with straight-edged razors and it just reminds you of the old places in Newark we all patronized. My barber there is the one and only Jimmy Russo, Drum Major of St. Lucy's Cadets, The Hawthorne Caballeros and The Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Corps. Patty bought me a gift certificate for this place about a year ago. When I walked in for my appointment who was there but Jimmy. We had reunited several months before when I went to the Cabs show in Clifton but I never knew what he did for a living. It just goes to show you what a small world it is for us Newarkers! Bob
Hi bob, i knew Jimmy was a hair dresser from being part of the field corps. i haven't seen him or them since i had to drop out to take care of Mom in 04. please give my regards to him & his wife Dale. we, my sister & I were at their wedding & i developed a friendship with his late wife Meg when i joined the corps in 93. she was one of the warmest people there to me.
the russos always were nice to us & made sure we were included, invited. please send regards from sister margaret. i lost his email when he moved back from florida. thanks
Ok-just checked the schedule! He comes out at 1:30 (never on time!), so how about anyone who can make it be there around 12:30 or so!! This way, we can meet, have some laughs and food, and then I can walk off the calories! Saseech and pepper sangwich! Can't wait!!!!!!!!! And of course Zeppoles!!!!! If this isn't a good time, pick another! My day is open
Great! I'll be in front of the church. See if you can pick me out amongst the old italian ladies sitting in their chairs! They all look the same and I "blend"!!!!!!!!!
Will be in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Saturday. Have a fantastic time. I hope more people join you. My wife may go with the 2nd Street Joannes Friday or Sunday.
Where was everyone?? I had a great time! It's very small! And it was COLD!!!!!! I got to see alot of old friends, and my cousin! My children came with me and we followed the Saint for a while! The "saseech and peppers" were awesome as well as the zeppoles! However the zeppoles were 8 bucks a dozen!!!!!!!! Times have certainly changed. I'll just have to start making them myself! Really wished some of you were there!Maybe next year! WOW-St. Gerard can STILL bring in the money!!!!!!! My kids couldn't believe it! The oom-pa band wasn't that bad either! Many memories!!!!!!! I did miss the "dolls on the stick" though!
