Apropos of the recent discussion about the St. Rose altar, Dick Evans sends in this photo taken there at his wedding, October 23, 1965, performed by Fr. Richard McDonald, and he provides these details:
Groom: Richard Evans
Bride: Maria Sabia
Our Party: Matron: Catherine Federici; Best Man: Robert Evans; Bridesmaids: Ann Smith, Maryann Losprugato Jr.; Bridesmaid: Sharon Evans; Flower Girl: Diane Russo;
Ushers: Jack Leonard, George Smith, Harry Reinhard, James Sabia.
What ever happened to Father McDonald? While I am glad that we connected with Fr.Flusk and Fr.O'Leary (who gave me the worst penances in Confession History= not that I am bitter... )but Margaret Pet brought up Fr. Sherer's whereabouts- still unanswered...
What ever did happen to Fr. Mcdonald??
In 1965, there were a number in my class that were known alterboys- notably Bernie Cook,Jim Belina, etc--- did you guys do weddings?
Jimmy Bellina and I did a lot of weddings together.For some reason the other altar boys either did'nt want to give up their Saturdays. October of 1965 would have us in 7th grade. Could have been us.
Bernie,
I remember that we used to get good tips for weddings. I got ten bucks once and the other altar boy didn't show. That was HUGE in those days--once in a while even a couple of bucks for funerals.
Then they made a policy change and all the tip money was supposed to be turned in and "pooled" for stuff like trips and sweatshirts. After that, you're right... the older guys didn't want to give up Saturdays, so the weddings went to the younger kids.
The other nasty assignment was 6:30 AM mass during the week. You'd walk the streets in the dark. I'd make it back home, sleep a while, and get to patrol post late. The 7:15 was fun because I was allowed to go to a famous Diner on Orange Street for English Muffins and Chocolate Milk (25c)...
You both honored Maria and I when you were Usher and Ann our Bridesmaid. Ann was special to all of us. We couldn't ask for more loyal and happy support that day. Our friends, family and neighbors with us. It's still working 42 years later. Thanks Smitty and God Bless Ann, She will always be in our prayers.
I'm happy to learn that Fr McDonald is well and A BIG Thank YOU to The Altar Boys. In the picture they look older.
WOW,
Like so many other memories that were buried before this website... the TUNNEL! Yes! I had forgotten about it for all these years. Very, very, secretive! Made us think that our artifacts would be safe when the Russians came to invade!
And Jimmy is absolutely right! There was not a more honorable duty than for an altar boy to be sure that the wine was acceptable for our beloved clergy !
