I always thought St. Rose church was beautiful.
I was married on 1/14/56. Msg.Gormely did not allow pictures to be taken in the church. It must have been about 20 degrees out side and there was no heat turned on in the church. Do the bride and groom still put flowers on the altar of the Blessed Mother?
Eileen...I was married in St. Rose also, and we took pictures anyway, despite Msgr.Gormley's rules(the old fart). The good thing was Father O'Leary, who officiated, never told us not to.
St. Rose's was jumpin' with wedddings on Saturdays after the war. My parents were married there on April 27, 1946 at 4:30 p.m. I mention the time because when I was a kid my mother became very friendly with Rose McRoberts, my classmate Carol's mother. Turns out Rose and her husband were married there on the exact same date at 3:30 p.m. How's that for a coincidence! (All these years later and I still remember all this stuff.)
Sorry I never met Fr. Powers. Is he the priest who use to ride a motorcycle? If so, I met him at my mother's wake in 1966. I left Newark in 1961 and moved to Las Vegas, Nv. Then I moved 1973 to 1998 to Pascagoula, MS. Then moved 1998 to 2006 to Spanish Fort, AL. Now I lived in Valdosta, GA. I still sound pretty much like I am from NJ. There is a chance that some day I may sound southern? When I come back to visit in NJ all my relatives and friends have an accent. LOL Eileen
Hi Eileen- I believe that Father Sherer drove a Vespa around- and he was at StRose for a tour of duty- 1965-1966 -
He was a great guy and a few of us alumni are left wondering about his story after he left Roseville.
Hi Laura: My mother really liked Fr. Shere. He was the priest who went around with the senior citizens from St. Roses. (Now I am a senior citizen). She said that he was so much fun. I remember when he showed up at Finnings (?) on Roseville Ave, he rode up on a motorcycle. Every one on the porch was surprised when he took off his helmet and it was the priest. He did not have us say the rosary. He gave one of the best talks. When he was finished he heard confessions. I had been divorced and remarried for some time. I went in the room and talked to him, went to confession, and the next day I received communion at my mother's mass.
My parents liked Fr. Scherer a lot, too. I was a newly-minted RN working at Orange Memorial the first time I met hi, My parents had him for supper, and after the meal he took my Mother for a ride down Grove Place on the Vespa. She loved it! I think he served as a missionary in S. America after leaving SRL.
