The first 7-11 in the United States. Magazines condemned from the pulpit by "Big Al".
Huggy Bear would walk his dogs every night. You'd see a future IRA freedom fighter, the real hero of "American Gangster", "Bubbles", Raymond and "the chink".
There was a street light, that if struck at a certain angle with an exact level of force would turn off. About fifteen minutes later, the light would come back on. There were perhaps a half dozen people in the entire world who knew how to do it. Happy Days borrowed this skill with Fonzie hitting Arnold's juke box. Scores of people failed trying to accomplish the task on that third Street corner. It is in the picture.
I remember a wooden pole, on 11th St. I think, if you kicked it about 4 ft off the ground, the light would go out. I don't recall the newer metal ones doing that. Anybody?
There was also a spot on the pole that an inch to the right or left would not work. And for a few months there was a "social club" operating a bookie joint. That was until it got busted by a county or state task force.
That's Bubbles on Third and Orange? I think I can see Hopps Drugs down the street. My grandparents lived in the apts across the street on Third. Does anyone remember the barber across Orange St. with the goldfish and all the crazy stuff in the window?
Turlres, guns, and the Police Gazette. One time I forgot the money for our haircuts, so I left my little brother there as collateral while I went home to get it.
I just noticed something familiar in this picture. There are three kids on the corner. The taller one in white with the shades, talking to the girl with the scooter, looks like Me. The short one following me around looks like, Little Jimmy Egan! That kid was always trying to move in on my action. Always following me, all day long, every day! Man, what a pain in the ass!
Hey Frank, what's a Turles?
They are the scores of former Roseville residents returning to the city of their youth to support the Newark Bears May 9th. Inexpensive, clean, safe family fun and they do sell beer. What can you do for $8.00 these days? People are coming from as far away at Toms River, Hillsborough, and Belmar.
