Ran this photo a couple years ago, but it's one of my favorite Newark images.

Built in 1910, the Firemans Insurance Company building was New Jersey's first skyscraper and its tallest until 1923, when Bamberger's was built seven feet taller (227'). It still stands proudly on the northeast corner of Broad and Market. (My dentist -- Dr. Brady -- had his office in this building, so admittedly my feelings are mixed.) This 1920 postcard image comes from the NPL's New Jersey Collection.

Wasn't that also called the "Kinney building" in later years?

No, the Kinney Bldg. is across the street.

That building

In the summer and fall of 1964, I ate lunch every day at a lunchonette on the first floor of that building. I had two cheeseburgers and a chocolate milk shake and got change back from a dollar. Of course, I was only making $1.10 an hour in the ladies shoe department of Ohrbachs.
