On October 17, 2008 Mrs. Josephine "Jessie" Bongiorno passed away at Community Medical Center in Toms River. She was the wife for 63 years of Domineck. mother of Barbara Newbaker and her husband Lloyd of Stockton and was predeceased by her son John. Mrs. Bongiorno was active in St. Roses. The Bongiorno's lived on Park Avenue. Many of you probably remember Barbara from the Imperial Lancer's Color Guard and East Orange Catholic. Mr. Bongiorno was active in the Holy Name at St. Roses.Mrs. Bongiorno had a funeral Mass at St. Luke's Church in Toms River. Burial was at Ocean County Memorial Park in Toms River.
I worked for her brother-in-law Joe Bongiorno, as a young teacher at Frankilin school in Bloomfield in the early 70's. The Bongiornos were a great family.
Sad to hear that. She was a nice lady. I visited our classmate John often when they lived over the barber shop on Park Avenue, and she was always kind and friendly. Rest in peace.
Great-grandmother, was active at Newark parish, 89 Josephine "Jessie" Bongiorno, 89, passed away on Oct. 17, 2008, at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Funeral Mass will be on Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Luke's Church, Toms River. Burial will follow at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River. Born in Parsons (Wilkes-Barre) Pa., Mrs. Bongiorno was a graduate of Coughlin High School, worked at the Singer Corp. during World War II and was office manager for Nationwide Check Corp. in East Orange for many years before retiring to Bradenton, Fla. In Bradenton, she served as a volunteer for more than 10,000 hours at Columbia Blake Hospital. She had been an active parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Newark and had many hobbies, including ceramics and knitting baby caps for local hospitals. She was an avid reader and loved her book club of Leisure Village East, Lakewood. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dominick; her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Lloyd Newbaker of Stockton, and was predeceased by her son, John, in 2004. She leaves a brother, Frank Calaguire, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; a sister, Mary Bisulca, Colonia; devoted grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
