While reading the obituary of Mrs. Bongiorno the other day, it stated that she was from Wilkes-Barre, Pa. It dawned on me that so many other of my old Roseville neighbors were from that area, The Summa Family was from Dunmore, Pa. Our up stairs neighbors at 144 N. Fourth Street, Mark and Julie Wise were from Scranton. The Cooks are from Duryea, Pa.
The Hettesheimer's of Third Street were from Larksville, Pa. Many of our state's top high school football coaches were from Berwick, Pa. Very interesting. My son reverses the trend and moved to wilkes-Barre.
The Torti Family of Bathgate Place were another distinguished Roseville Family that came from Dunmore, Pa. I keep seeing on the news that Joe Biden and Hilliary Clinton's father were from nearby Scranton, Pa.
I'm the only one in my family not born in Scranton
(Mercy Hospital). Mom is from Scranton, and still
there at 97, while dad was from Dunmore. I lived
in Dunmore while working for Citicorp.
Two brothers, Eddie and Marty are in the area since
the early seventies. Great people up there. "It's a great
place to visit and you might want to live there".
My son Michael has lived up there since he first went to Wilkes University in 1990. He currently lives in Wilkes-Barre, but has also lived in Tunkhannock, Harvey's Lake, forty-Fort, Kingston, Forty-Fort, and Duryea. Saturday we are going up for the Mayor's Cup Football Classic arch-rivals Kings College vs. Wilkes University.
My mother was from Scranton--we lived on North 11th Street--Mr. and Mrs Gower across the street were also from the Scranton area, as was Mrs. Kerr next door and Mrs. O'Reilly down the street. Lack of work in that area, especially during the Depression, even a problem there today, forced many people in that area to move to NJ.
My Grandparents Catherine & James Gibson & Bill & Adeline McGowan were from Scranton as was my mother and father Peggy & Tom McGowan. And as you see my cousin Jay Delbo and his family was from PA too. A lot of them used to work in the coal mines in PA and moved to NJ when the mines shut down. You can go to Scranton and visit the old coal mines. They give tours. It's hard to believe that people used to work like that.
There does seem to a great connection to the Scranton area and Roseville.
My parents (Mary McDonnell and Peter Dalbo)were born and raised in Dunmore. They left when jobs were scare and WWII was on the horizon. First for New York City and then to Newark. They met again and were married in St. Michael's and resided in Newark, (Roseville). They were active members of St. Rose's for many, many years. I looked so forward to visiting my Nonna, mi zio and mi zia e' cugini every summer. I was a great escape from the city. I also remember hearing and being apart of the Dunmore connections with the Cook's, Egan's, and the Gaetano's et al at St. Rose's
I do not know if this coincidence or not. But it was neat growing up with what seemed to an extended family. All gone but not forgotten. Eddie say an ave for them in St, Ann's in Scranton.

Although we were "over the line" on Eaton Place, E.O., I did attend SRL. My dad was from Scranton, mom from W-B. They migrated here during the war with several of their siblings due to no work to be found in the w-B/Scr area.
The Evans Family Father from Pittsburgh area, Mom from Scranton. came here 1942 for work.
Lived East Orange until 1946 then 27 Humboldt Street and 109 North Seventh.
My late Brother Bobby and I had a lot of summer vacations with our cousins in Scranton
The Durkin's were also from Scranton. Paul Durkin, North Seventh Street. I don't know if his younger brother Pat was born in PA. His Baby Sister was born NJ
Pennsylvania-Six-Five-Thousand. The Glen Miller Story is a tear jerker of a tale, the story of a big band leader who entertained the troops during WW II, starring James Stewart and June Allyson. Miller's plane went into the sea, either from weather or enemy fire. It was never found. I don't know where they got that song title; maybe they were from that area. One of my favorites.
My name is Marty Kimball and I approve this message.
Was the number for the Hotel Pennsylvania in Manhattan (across the street from Penn Station, of course). The hotel's lounge was a frequent host to many of the big bands. Miller's band did an extended stay there, prompting the song.
Jeez I never knew there Roseville had so many connections to the SWB area. When I started my business in '90 my biggest client was Nabisco in East Hanover and they moved their finance division to Wilkes Barre-- I don't think I'd ever heard of it before that. Great area. Nice people.
I learned to say Wilkes "Berry", not "Bahr" and to not be suspicious when people acted nice. Lots to do out there. I got to a lot of Red Baron's games against teams like the Clippers with Bernie Williams. And Pocono Downs. Great hot dogs at Abe's on South Main. And wings at the "Chicken Coop" in the Wyoming Valley. Stayed at the Woodlands.
I heard from some of the HR people at Nabisco that part of the relocation plan was based on the lower standard of living out there compared to NJ and the higher quality of service they hoped they could expect from employees. Sure enough, they told a story that when one of the first snow storms arrived after they moved into the new building, the workers out there showed up for work EARLY. They were the kind of people who got up early and shoveled out to give themsleves extra time to get to work. Wouldn't find that in Jersey.
One of my father's best friends was a co-worker on the Ballantine trucks from Scranton who used to drive coal trucks at the mines. If it snowed, my father claimed he always picked "Stosh" as his partner because Stosh could somehow even get the beer truck up the hills in North Bergen.
I have been to the Chicken Coop and stayed at the Woodlands. Other old favorites were Patte's Sports Bar, Genetti's,Boston's and Murrays. New favorite are Big Ugly's and the Arena Bar.
I always stop at the top of Drinker street
for the Gertrude Hawk's outlet store. Rinaldi's
beer distributorship is next to the tracks now.
Hey Marty, I'm glad your surgery went well. It was
great to see everybody last October reunion 07.
We can have a St Rose reunion in Dunmore at Anna
Maria's on Drinker street in 09.
Bret Trichillo of Dunmore '2001 was one of the best football players ever to play for my son at Wilkes University. Was national divison 3 Player of the year in 2003 and 2004. He is an engineer now and lives in Caldwell while working on the new Giants Stadium. Do you know his family, Jim? Corey Gilroy Dunmore "06 plays defensive back for him now.
Good to hear from you this morning before I hopped on a BART train for work in SF. Thanks for the "Welcome Home" comment - only Vietnam Vets would understand it (most likely) and appreciate it. I'm treasurer of the Viet Nam Veterans of Diablo Valley in Danville, CA. I'm very heavy into various Veterans causes in the Bay Area. Take a look at our website at http://www.vnvdv.com. Also check out http://www.eastbaystanddown.org. I'm the Finance Officer for this biennial event - held this past August just before my heart attack. I won an 8 day paid volunteer leave of absence from Wells Fargo to participate at Stand Down this year. Some guys think I worked too hard at Stand Down and that it caused my "event". I don't think so - just poor eating habits (news to me) most likely caused the clogged arteries.
My quad by-pass surgery went well. Recovery is slow - not immediate. Many say it will take a year before all feels fine physically. I went back to work last week after being off for 3 months.
Keep in touch with me. Tony and I are already planning on coming back to Jersey next year for a Good Counsel reunion currently being planned for the Fall. Time will tell if it really gets organized. OLGC Class of 64 didn't have a 40th Anniv. reunion so hopefully the 45th Anniv. will work out if enough people respond to the notice on Classmates. If not, a meeting in Dunmore with you wouldn't be a problem for me as I still have relatives in the surrounding Scranton/Dunmore area and out as far as Clarks Summit. It's been about 3 years since I last visited family there so I'm due for a return trip. I usually drive up from VA after stopping first at my sister's house to rest up after a 5 hour flight from SF.
Tony, Sarah and I had a great time at the St. Rose's reunion last year - seeing everyone again and renewing friendships. We're all getting up there in years as they say. Thanks to Carol Raab and her crew of dedicated workers (the Committee) for organizing a super event. It was also good to see Padre Bob. Too bad that Father Flusk couldn't make it because of his health but it was good to see him at the prior reunion.
All the best!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family.
Jay and Donnie passed away. I will see charlie hand Wednesday night. He married Joe Rocco's sister. See Benny and Dominick about twice a year. We also see Raymond's brother, Vinnie.
Joe Grabowy was living in Vineland, Mike in Clifton, Glad to hear from you. The man who invented the underhanded forward pass. How are Dave and Lump Lump?
in 1964, he stood about 6 foot three 350 pounds. Biggest man I ever saw at that time. Tony Hammed and I saw him knock out a disrespctful milk man who had double parked in Lenny's way with one punch. Called his six year old son BOY. Came down to play tackle football with no equipment at Newark Academy. He was on your team, Mark. We never got the guy down once. Mr. Crowley, Charlie Hand, Mike Torluccio , John Hempel, and myself would grab him and the five of us would push him out of bounds, as we could not bring him down. He and Butch LaPollo, the barber, had the best right hand I ever saw. For his age Mr. Crowly was the toughest. He had guts. he backed down to no man.
My parents moved to East Orange in the late thirties for work. Many made the same trip, especially to work for Public Services Coordinated Transport. After graduating from NCE, I made the move back to Pa. and I still live outside of Scr. I lived on Orange Street and Myrtle Avenue in Newark. I graduated from SRL in 1962. The nuns were special.
John, I was in your class and I do remember you. I'm Maureen Devine--married, now a grandmother, living in suburb of Philadelphia. Happy New Year--I think the class of 1962 should have a reunion! E-mail Jeff Schick occasionly, he's in Raleigh North Carolina.
In addition to wishing everyone a better new year than the last, I might add a few more connections between Roseville and the Scranton PA area. Mike O'Hara, the son of a former owner of the Clipper Ship on Roseville Avenue now lives in Carbondale, PA and is the Commander of the VFW in Honesdale, PA. As for myself, it was moves from Roseville to Bloomfield, to Maplewood, and now to Elk Lake, just north ow tiny Waymart, PA which is between Carbondale and Honesdale on US Route 6. This Roseville site has brought back many great memories of the old neighborhood and they are truly appreciated.
Happy New Year! I tried to respond to your other email address but was undeliverable. Do you know how I can find out what happened to Joe Brown and Joe Cook ? I haven't been in touch with anyone since 1970 when I left N.J.
If you are willing to backcheck the threads, you will find a story on Mr. Brown. It is over a year old. Could be back 2-3 years. There is an incredible history of Roseville past and present on these pages. Thank you, John Crowley.
John Flannery, If you are refering to Joe Cook and Joe Brown of the Class of 1962 I'm afraid they are no longer with us. I'm not sure of the details but I know someone will be able to help you. Bob D
I posted about his passing from an article in the Star ledger citing his role as a student activist @ Newark Rutgers in his college days. It is on a previous thread. 2007/06/05 not sure. You may be able to source the article from the Star ledger files. Good luck.
John, how are you. Idon't know if you remember me but i am Joes' younger brother. I remember you very well. I would tag along sometimes when you guys were going to play football or baseball. Especially on the island in Branch Brook Park. My e-mail is Bcook067@aol.com
