Well, it must be December again, 'cause here's the Monorail. This 1948 photo submitted by Gordon Snyder shows the holiday monorail suspended from the ceiling of the toy department at Kresge's. Snyder's aunt, a professional photographer, took the picture for a client.

To tell the truth, until I found the photo I wasn't sure if I'd imagined it.

Kresge memories

monorail in toy department.

Live show with Buffalo Bob and Princess Summerfallwinterspring No Howdy.

Bob Cousey

Waiting 45 minutes for Roger Maris to sign my copy of his book and having him walk out before I could get to front of the line, he was 35 minutes late. Author Jim Ogle signed the book.

Civil courts and the Newark board of education are among tenants who now share building.

Was this powered by a bare electric wire attached to those white-colored, ceiling fixture looking things, maybe insulators? I can't see a connection from the car but how else would it powered? I know, I know, it was powered by five (nationality of your choice here) guys with a ladder...four to keep moving the ladder and one at the top to push the cars.

I remember this monorail and the toy dept. I can't imagine a dept store today investing money in such a ride. In many ways things were better back in the day.

The Newark Department Stores

December 5 2008, 2:17 PM

Bambergers, Kresges, Hahnes, Ohrbachs and Kleins.

Chris Carlin and I applied at Bambergers and were interviewed by Miss McGee, but she never called us back.

John Hempel and I did get a job at their wearhouse in 1966: mattress department.

My wife was hired by Hahne's as a Christmas associate in 1966 and had moved up to assistant to the vice president by the time she left to raise a family in 1972.

Hahne's was the more up-scale preppy store.

My friend Benny Abruzzo loved to ride down Halsey Street gawking at the female shoppers on a nice spring day. There were no malls back then.

I used to buy wooden baseball bats with names of major leaguers on them for $2.00 at Modegas.

When Joe Sica and I worked at the main post office we would often eat lunch at 2:30 am at an all night cafeteria on Broad Street.

A cab ride from the Main Post Office to Fourth Street would cost $.90.

I was hired to work in ladies shoes at Ohrbachs. First time I worked with Jewish people and learned about the Jewish Holidays. 12 years of Catholic education never mentioned the holocast a single time.

The department stores of Newark.

Remember those "chimes" that would ring out in different patterns? Kind of a Morse code to the employees.
