Been many, many years since I saw the H & B storefront. My family lived above H & B from 1962-63. The Curran's lived next door over the Katz Storefront. I suppose it was the lighted sign whose wires overheated and caused electrical fires. During the short time we lived there 2-3 times we would get woken up by firemen banging on the door - and being bundled up in our bed blankets and shuttled over to BODHOLTS to wait. Ah the good ole' days!
My mother worked at Moy Bing waitressing. He was a mean old bastard to his employees.

That's OK, Jen -- we got even with him. Between the eggs we threw through the fan, the M-80s we taped to the kitchen door and the times we dined & dashed, we evened the score. Yes, we were such good boys!

Believe it or not, I had my Confirmation "dinner" at Moy Bing's with my family. My sponsor was my girlfriend Flora ann Manganello, who was only a year ahead of me in school, but was almost 4 yrs. older. Her parents started her in school very late, not sure why. My mother , to this day, doe not like chinese food. Wonder why???
I spent my last Christmas Eve in Newark at Moy Bing's. Before Midnight Mass some friends and I went there around 9PM because it was snowing and too cold to hang around outside. The names that come to mind are; Billy Strallow, Bobby Regan, Jerry Dinverno and myself. That was Christmas Eve, 1968. The following July we moved to Livingston. Great memories with great friends! Bobby and Jerry are no longer with us.They are gone but not forgotten. It's me and you Billy!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year EVERYONE!
New Years Eve and Chinese food. About ten years ago my wife and I started a New Year's Eve tradition of having an early dinner @ a chinese resturant in Clifton next to the former rowe-manse Store. We are done by 9 pm and then people can go do what they want to do. We go home.
last year we were up to 9 people. We had 4 East Orange Catholic alums in the crowd. We also meet some people who go year after year.
That reminds me of the scene in "A Christmas Story" by Jean Shepherd where the dogs next door steal the turkey, and the family has dinner at a Chinese restaurant where they are introduced to "Chinese turkey" -- a freshly decapitated duck.
That's Right Rico. Great people! Mr. Regan was with the Newark Fire Department's Arson Squad. His brother was Richie Regan, former Basketball Coach, Athletic Director and Chairman of Pirate Blue Alumni of Seton Hall University. My mother worked for him for over 30 years!
Situated between the H&B building and the corner building there was a maybe 2 ft. narrow alley passage way. During one of my explorations in the narrow alleyway I discovered that the brickwall of the corner building had one brick that had been chiseled out from wall and had a steel hook in it. It was clearly a pass thru. You could look thru the hole and see some kind of stuffing deep in the hole. I often wondered what had been passed from the hole into the building and if it had anything to do with former occupants of the corner building. Funny how these childhood mysteries things still hang in your memory...
PS. I lived on the second floor of the building at the corner of Orange St and Humboldt right next to H&B from from around 61 to 63. I attending 5th & 6th grade at St. Rose. I remember waking up in the middle of the night many time with fires on that block. Then we moved away for 2 years then moved back to the corner of Rosville & Park. That's when I was in the Imperial Lancers.
Hey Bob I have just recently signed on here. What happened to Bobby Regan and Jerry Dinverno. They were in the drum corp with us. At least I remember Jerry. Did Bobby have a sister Maureen who was in the drum corp too? I always mix up my Eagan & Regans. My best friend Gail Gilmartin had a crush on Jerry for years. She is going to kill me for writing that here. I'm really sad to here they are no longer with us. What happened?
Ah yes! I remember H&B's very well. Pomp, Keele, Tedesco and Mooney and I used to hang out there. Had my first cigarette in front of the store!! (Kathy and Keele MADE me smoke~lol). Parliament, 25 cents a pack. 5 cent potatoe chips! Yep-we were sooooo COOL!! Harry (I believe that was his name) would let me have a packs of smokes til I came up with the money. Many memories! All great ones! Hell of alot of fun!!!!!! Til the NUNS came around the corner. Moy Bings?? Yes I ate there many times! And yes-he was a nasty man! But-I'd do it all over again!!!!!!!
Who could forget that oddball delivery bike, with the small front wheel and huge basket, chained up in front of the store? I know some of you guys must've worked there, no?
And 5 bonus points to anyone who knows what the letters H and B stood for. You people who lived on that block are disqualified due to unfair advantage.
I also worked there, during the early sixties and seem to remember their last name to be Balzer, I might be off on the spelling but that's what I recall.
do you have any pictures of Boyles Bar on the corner of Orange st. and 7th..i use to live on the 3rd floor there..and the crazy part is it's still there but called a different name..went for a ride down memory lane a while back but my heart was broken on how it all looked..very sad..it was a AWESOME place at one point and time and thank God i have those memories....and mostly this site to come and visit...
Ah, Boyle's; I remember it well. It was my second home when I worked out of the old precinct down the block. Heard many a last call at that place. Mostly fond memories, but others not so.
Charlie Quinn had the place back then; father, I think, to a kid we were in drum corp with. Kevin Qunn? Or maybe he was Charlie Jr. Met him at one of those reunion gigs a few years back.
The bar had a wooden replica Thompson .45 cal submachinegun suspended from the ceiling, supposedly carved by a Newark Fireman. Added a certain charm to the place. If those walls could talk...
