Commitment

January 9 2009, 3:37 PM

Promised my brother-in-law's niece to go to her girls varsity basketball game at Parsippany High School tonight versus Summit. Her name is Elena Noonan and last year she led Morris County in scoring and was the Star Ledger player of the week once. She also made all county in soccer. Back in our day did the girls of SRL play sports? I think the PAL sports were for boys only. I know they were not allowed to play little league back then. I never saw a girl playing softball or basketball at Sussex Avenue playtground. Well ladies, did you play sports back then? Only two generations ago, but sometimes it seems like the dark ages.

There was a girl's team in the late forties and through the fifties. Pat Torsiello (57)was one of the many star players. Orien O'Brien coached the team in the middle 50's and I think Margarent Brodie coached around 1959. On second thought maybe it was a CYO team in the forties but I know that SRL had a team in the 50's. We practiced at Garfield school.
I wonder what year the girl's team started?

I know for certain that there was a girls' team at St. Rose's during the 1961-1962 school year. I was the worst player on the team!

Thank you Jean and Maureen.

This is a quite interesting topic that I do not think has been discussed before. Elena had 24 points and 13 reboundslast eveing. She now needs 36 points to reach 1,000 points for her career. I am pretty sure that there were girls track teams that competed in the CYO track meets at the Newark Armory and Schools Stadium.

Where's Bobby

January 10 2009, 4:05 PM

Ok Bobby! Happy Birthday! We were waiting for you and you never showed. Poor John C was really very upset!! We had to keep giving him alcohol to calm his nerves. Poor man really had a rough night of worrying about you! Is there something between you two that we don't know about???!! lol~
But-I had a wonderful time. It was a small crowd though so I think everyone should show up next month. Oh-and Bill Strallow is Still traveling in disguise!! But-everyone will be happy to know that Eileen is taking very good care of him! So- see you next month!!
John, I hope your ok today and not worrying! Bobby will be there next month.
Bernie-let's get those "summer get together" plans started! And I still can't figure out what CYO dance we were talking about! Oh well-tough krumpits!! lol~

Yes, I was most concerned, seeing as we'd been planning to toast the young man on his birthday achievement. As well, I had brought a special gift which I showed to Don Scher, which elicited a reaction similar to Dracula's when a crucifix is dangled in front of him.

As well, brother Jim was under the weather and unable to reconnect with his ol' pal Steve Dowdell (SRL '64), who was a pleasant surprise Friday evening. He walked up to me at Cryan's and introduced himself (given another minute I would have recognized him, as his was a regular mug at the house). I asked him how he'd recognized me, and he said I look like my old man. I pretended I didn't hear that, and the rest of the night went well.
