I get home, but a few times a year. I love it when breakfast brings bakery goodies, The Ledger, but not so much the head shaking stories. When I ask for any good news, it seems that “Down Neck” has remained intact. Great restaurants, and almost safe. What a great tribute, and perhaps the last vestige, and I remember a mix of Italian and Portuguese. Glad to hear it remains “cancer free.” I got served my first beer, at fourteen, and at the Triangle Café. Pink “high roll”, burgundy pants, suede featherweights , leather jacket and silk socks! Remember the Alamo.
While not a pimp, I did get to touch my first boob. The local reputation had a crush on my friend, and we set her up. After guiding her to the bushes, and once topless, he yelled now, now, now! I popped up with a camera, that had no film, but had a very bright flash-cube. It came down to letting us touch a real boob, or the picture would go to her parents. Now, where have put my keys?
I hate to burst your bubble, but Down Neck is not quite the paradise you recall. The restaurants are still good, if you can find a place to park. The Portuguese remain, but the Italians have mostly left to be replaced by South Americans of every stripe. And you couldn't swing a dead cat down there without hitting either an undercover cop or a bag of coke, or both.
hi marty, agreed from what i hear, the neighbor behind me moved in 5 yrs. ago. came from there. we struck over the fence conversation when we found out & told him we were so 10th st, newarkers. he said used to be nice but he & his family saw drastic changes & decided to get out while the going was good. good thing with the housing market in the toilet now. i haven't been there in yrs........... but i will take his word for it.
