But I do remember Visco's Sporting Goods on lower Bloomfield Avenue, Modega's on Market Street, Green's on Halsey Street, Tess' on Summer Avenue, and East Orange Sporting Goods on Main Street East Orange. Sadly, all are now closed. I also recall DeBacco's in Belleville and Bloomfield Sports Center.
I hope everyone had the opportunity to see the Cherry Blossom Festival. It was spectacular.
I recall this store- it was the "In" place to get bowling equipment among other things...plus they did a brisk trophy business - they closed the Main St location and re-opened in West Orange where their business name still is "East Orange"
Pretty much the super stores have put the locals out of business- same story about local movie theaters are megaplexes, grocery stores turned into supermarkets, box store pharmacies replace the corner drug store to name a few.
My mind combined Modells and DaVegas and created a new store "Movegas". Ha ha. Bought a George Kell model bat there for $2.00in 1958. Speaking of baseball GREATER NEWARK TOURAMENT in full swing this Saturday. Used to play it at
Schools Stadium. Now the finals are played at Riverfront Stadium on Broad Street, with semi's and quarters in Verona and Belleville. I root for my nephew's team, Columbia, but Seton Hall Prep usually wins it all. Back in my team Union, Parsippany, Saint Benedicts, Montclair, and Vailsburg were among the better teams. Kids work at baseball 12 months a year now.
