| For about 37 years they played the Greater Newark Tournament for high school baseball at Schools Stadium.
But finally the stadium became too decrepit to continue playing there and the venue was moved to Verona High School. It is so nice to see the GNT return to Newark at beautiful Riverfront Stadium. 1:15 today it is Nutley vs. Livingston. I am rooting for Livingston and their great shortstop/pitcher Mike Genovese. His dad is such a great guy and his long-time mentor is our old friend Dennis Sasso of Essex Catholic fame. Jerry Izenberg fails to see that Schools Stadium was an awful place to play baseball.
It will be completely raised in a few weeks and then construction will begin on a 21st century field that will finally have locker rooms and concession stands.
The only baseball that will be played there will be the little leagues on fields near the First Avenue entrances.

Frank, If you stand between homeplate and 3rd base you can see the back of our house right behind the old Recreation Dept. building. But, we are all in Belmar! BD |

Sounded like a festive atmosphere.. Seems like the new owners are doing a much better job than our old buddy rick cerone ever did. Mike Genovese is a really good ball player and i hope that he is all right. |
