6th Avenue Candy Store (Josie's)

June 11 2009, 12:25 AM

I am trying to help Victoria Weber find her long lost family members from 6th Avenue.

My parents, Josie & Angelo, owned the candy store on 6th Avenue & 11th Street from around 1954 until 1965.

If anyone remembers the previous owners, who lived in the apartment building next to the store, perhap you can help Victoria find her family. My sister, Connie, and I seem to remember his name was Paul, but can't be sure. We do remember that there were at least 2 young sons that went to SRL in the mid 50's.

With all of our former neighbors out there, I sure someone will probably remember this family.

Let's wish Victoria luck in her search.

6th Avenue Candy Store.

Did they live in the building next to the store,or in the apartment building on the corner of 9th Street and 6th Ave? I believe that apartment building was known as "Foster's" after the owner.

Hi Joe. The family lived next to the store on either the 2nd or 3rd floor.

Ok, Nick, you would know better than I. I spent a lot of dimes in the store -- and your mother could make a great cherry coke! :-)

Joe, you're right. My mother did make a good Cherry Coke, but it was my Dad's Egg Creams that were the best.

And I remember those as well, Nick - first time I ever had an "egg cream" was in "Josie's" :-)

Were Vinnie and Larry the owners that came after Josie? I remember two guys who owned the store after Josie sold it.

Hi Peggy,

Larry & Vinnie, who we think may have been twins, were the sons of the previous owners. My parents owned the store from 1954/55 until 1965. They did go to SRL but moved when they were young, probably around 12 years old.

Nick, I loved your Mom and Dad. Spent many hours there buying penny candy from the candy cases and pretzel rods. Who were the people who bought the store from your parents?

Better clue

June 12 2009, 3:31 PM

Maybe this would be a big clue, I know the father of these brothers I am trying to find accidently shot himself somewhere about 1960 give or take a few years and the wife died a few years after that.

Peggy,

Unfornately, I don't remember the name of the people that bought the store from my parents. However, I do remember that the store had become more of a lunchionette than the typical candy store. And as the neighborhood changed, so did the store. The last time I drove thru the area, it appeared to be a more like a grocery store.

Vinnie and Larry

June 23 2009, 7:01 PM

My brother Tom is right, Vinnie and Larry Lacari lived next door to the candy store. Their parents Paul and Margaret owned the store before Josie and Angelo. Vinnie and Larry were faternal twins. I'm pretty sure the tragic death of their father caused the family to move. I believe Paul committed suicide. The boys were still young. I remember making my Communion with Vinnie and Larry. Their parents gave them the two bicycles that were in the store up over the display windows as Communion presents. Jean Doyle
